Donald W. Vaughan

Death date: February 25, 2014

Funeral for Donald Wayne Vaughan, 83, of Lawton, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Whinery-Huddleston Chapel.

He died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, in a local hospital.

Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Donald was born Oct. 13, 1930, in Blair, to Thomas and Ruby Simmons Vaughan. Donald attended school in Blair for two years, and his family moved to Altus, where he graduated from high school in 1948.

He married Martha Brake on Dec. 31, 1950, in Altus.

He attended Altus Junior College and attended business college in Wichita Falls, Texas, before enlisting in the National Guard's 45th Infantry. He was soon called to active duty, where he served in Japan and Korea.

After his honorable discharge from the National Guard in 1952, Donald began working for AirCo in Oklahoma City. His work with AirCo allowed him to move to several locations throughout the United States. After retiring from AirCo in 1990, he moved to Nashville, Tenn., to work as a distributor for Ash-McNeil Welding Supply. In 1995, he moved to Lawton to be near his family.

Donald enjoyed mowing his lawn and took pride in having a nice yard. He loved to watch the Dallas Cowboys, the OU Sooners and the OSU Cowboys play football.

Donald was an active member of Central Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, sang in the choir and was in the Adult 2 Sunday school class.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Thomas and Ruby Vaughan; sisters: Norma Crossan and Edna Jean Vaughan; brothers-in-law: Tommy Brake, Grady Brake, WJ Curtis and James Crossan; and sister-in-law, Loucyle Robnett.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Martha, of the home; sister, Dorothy Curtis, of Lawton; nephews: Jim Crossan and wife Taira, of Cache; and Craig Crossan and wife Nora, of San Antonio; brothers-in-law: Harold Brake and wife Mary, of Wichita Falls, Texas; and Kenneth Brake and wife Margaret, of Corum; and sister-in-law, Karen Bartling, of Altus. He also has numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donald's name to the Salvation Army or the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, Disaster Relief Fund, 3800 N. May, Oklahoma City 73112.
