Margie LouAnn "Lou" [Fortney] Smith


Birth date: September 5, 1939
Death date: February 24, 2014

Margie Lou Ann "Lou" Fortney Smith, Cache, was born September 5, 1939 in Ryan, OK to Charles "C.O." and Mollie Jarngin Lovett. She died peacefully at home on February 24, 2014, at the age of 74, with her family at her side.

Lou attended school in Temple, OK, where she was a basketball player. She graduated in 1957 from Temple High School.

She married Jesse David Fortney in 1956; they had three children: Clarence, Michael and Kevin.

She married Kenneth Smith in 1985.

She was a secretary for Geronimo Road Elementary School for 24 years until her retirement.

Lou was an avid bowler. She won many championships and awards to include the Lawton/Ft. Sill Women's Bowler of the Year in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987. She was inducted into the Oklahoma Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1990.

She was an active member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. She has been credited for keeping the Church functioning.

She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She helped raise three of her grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mollie Lovett; and a son, Kevin Fortney.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Kenneth, of the home; her sons, Clarence Fortney and wife Sheree of Lawton and Michael Fortney and wife Kim of Chattanooga, OK; step-daughters, Terri Nix and husband Alan of Waco, TX, Kim Woods and husband Jackie of Lipan, TX and Kerri Funk and husband Robert of McAllen, TX; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; siblings: Charlene Dowling of Brock, TX, Marcella Cole of Brock, TX, Donald Lovett and wife Juanita of DeSoto, TX and Mary Mills of Weatherford, TX. She also has many loving friends.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Lou Smith's name to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, PO Box 6025, Lawton, OK 73506
