Charles Loyd Dennis


Funeral for Charles Loyd Dennis, 79, Lawton, will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Northwest Church of Christ.

Mr. Dennis died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at a local hospital.

Burial with military honors will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Becker Funeral Home.

He was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Hollis to Loyd and Lila Tedford Dennis. He married Lavelle Garrett on Jan. 25, 1948, in Hollis.

During World War II, he was assigned with the 158th Regimental Combat Team in the Philippines, and the Occupation Forces in Japan. He received an honorable discharge in 1946.

He received his bachelor's degree in math and business from Southwestern State College at Weatherford in 1950, and taught at Granite Public Schools. He then began his civil service career at Sheppard Air Force Base as an aircraft and engine mechanics instructor. He and his family moved to the Lawton/Fort Sill area in 1955. His civil service career encompassed many jobs including instructor, computer programmer and statistician/mathematician. He retired in 1981 from the communications and electronics division.

He was a longtime member of Northwest Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon for 30 years, a Bible class teacher and was involved in missions in the United States and Mexico.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Rick Dennis, Tulsa; two daughters and a son-in-law: Vickie Lee, Tulsa; and Denise and James Henderson, Owasso; seven grandchildren: Charissa Lee; Melodie Lee Shaffer and her husband, Jonathan; Levi and Lauren Dennis; and Jonathan, Emily and Caleb Henderson; and two sisters: Dorothy Kuykendall, Altus; and Mary Jo Barefoot, Raleigh, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Seth Dennis Henderson.
