SFC Charles David Smith, Sr., USA (ret)

SFC Charles D. Smith, Sr, USA (ret) was born on February 22, 1934 in Henry, TN to Comodore and Nellie [Hillard] Smith. He died on March 2, 2014 in Lawton, OK at the age of 80.

Charles was raised and attended school initially in Tennessee, but moved with his family to East St Louis, IL where he graduated high school.

He enlisted in the US Army in 1955 and served at several posts in the United States as well as overseas in Germany, Korea, and twice in Vietnam. Decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation w/Palm, a Good Conduct Medal Fifth Award, and a number of additional ratings, commendations and certificates of training.

Charles retired from the military at Ft Sill, OK after over 21 years of service to his country.

He married Shirley Ann Fowler on April 7, 1969 in Huntington, TN and would have celebrated their 45th Anniversary next month.

While living in Lawton, Charles worked for nearly 20 years with the civil service on Post before his retirement in 1996.

He enjoyed fishing, BBQs, working on cars (or anything mechanical), and watching football or military channels on TV.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and Granny, Annie Smith; a daughter, LaMonica D. Smith; and one sister, Annie Sue Smith.

Survivors include his wife Shirley, of the home; 2 sons, Charles D. Smith, Jr and his wife Jackie of Dallas, and Shannon Smith and fiance Heather Roath of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Donique Smith, NaKendra Brown, and L J Brown; a second daughter, Pricilla Hudson and husband Junior, and numerous additional special family members, cousins and friends in Tennessee including Peggy Boyd and husband Charlie, and Edna M. Terry.
