Attelia "Tillie" [Pohlemann] Thorpe

Attelia "Tillie" Thorpe of Carol Stream, IL

Attelia "Tillie" Thorpe passed away November 6th after a courageous struggle with ALS.

She was born June 1, 1937, on a large farm near Apache, OK.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Mary Pohlemann and her older brother, Robert "Bobby" Pohlemann.

Tillie is survived by her husband Jere of 54 years, daughter Beth Mohr, her husband Robert and two children, Christoffer and Annie, son Ernie Thorpe, his wife Becky and daughter, Emma and two sisters Mary Jane Schwarz and Dotty Cooke and their spouses respectively, Ed Schwarz and Elbert (Jack) Cooke.

. Tillie grew up in Apache on her father's farm. Tillie was a graduate of Apache High School, where she excelled in music and theater. After high school, Tillie attended college at Oklahoma College for Women and Oklahoma A&M prior to meeting her husband, Jere, during a summer hire position at Ft. Sill.

Tillie spent a good portion of her life devoted to raising her children and being involved in school and other activities of her children, from athletics to scouts.

After raising her children, Tillie also spent the remainder of her life being actively involved with her family and community.

She taught 3rd and 6th grades for the Department of Defense Schools in Europe, where she earned many awards doing what she loved, working with children.

Moving to Wheaton, Ill. she volunteered with Metropolitan Family Services of Chicago and later became Manager of their resale shop, Treasure House, in Glen Ellyn, Ill. Tillie was able to take Treasure House from a small thrift store, to high end resale shop that was frequented by many in the community. She treasured all her students, the volunteers at the shop and her many customers.

Her other passions included gardening, traveling, playing bridge and planning many types of activities for her family and friends.

She will be deeply missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Les Turner ALS Foundation or Metropolitan Family Services of Chicago.

A memorial service was held in Wheaton, on November 9th, 2013. Funeral Services will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church at 11:00 AM in Apache, OK, with visitation from 9:30 to 10:30, on November 18th, 2013.

Interment will be at the Fort Sill National Cemetery at 1:00 under the direction of Crews Funeral Home.
