Benny John Sherrill

Benny John Sherrill was born on November 12, 1929 in Viola, AR to H.T. and Ella [Wood] Sherrill. He died on January 20, 2013 in Lawton, OK at the age of 83.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, January 25, 2013 at the Whinery-Huddleston Chapel. Interment with Full Air Force Honors will follow at Ft Sill National Cemetery.

Benny was raised and attended school in Arkansas and Oklahoma.

He graduated from Lawton High School and enlisted in the US Air Force.

He married Nell Tiner in 1954 at Jackson, MS and they made their home in Lawton following tours of duty in Korea and Alaska.

While serving in the Air Force, Benny received numerous decorations and awards including the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal w/5 Lps, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Longevity Service Award w/3 OLC, and special designation as an Air Force Recruiter, a position he held up to his retirement.

After being Honorably Discharged from the Air Force, Benny worked at Al's Body Shop, whose owner had been his best friend when they were growing up, for another 20 years. He then started working as an insurance adjuster for Farmers Insurance until his retirement in 1995.

Throughout his lifetime, Benny enjoyed bowling with Nell, golfing with his buddies, playing his guitar with his brothers at family gatherings, OU football, and most importantly, spending time with Nell and the girls whenever he could.

Benny was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Nell; 3 daughters, Lynell Shadid and husband Kyle of Broken Arrow, OK, Dr. Sheila (Renee) Rulison and husband LTC (ret) Ron Rulison of Dallas, and Teresa Sherrill and companion Sherri Sanders of Lawton; grandchildren, CPT Brian Rulison of Ft Benning, GA, LT Blake Rulison of Ft Leonard Wood, MO, Benjamin Sherrill of Broken Arrow, OK, Jennifer Beasley and husband Steve of Blythewood, SC, and Kim Winton and husband Eric of Boston, MA; 3 brothers in law, George Tiner and wife Jamesye of Jackson, MS, Lenwood Tiner and Ralph Tiner and wife Allie, all of Waynesboro, MS; sisters in law, Barbara Sherrill of Ponca City, OK, Audie Vee "Dood" Tiner, Betty Tiner and Jo Tiner, as well as many nieces and nephews in Mississippi and Oklahoma.
