Donald A. Quarles

Memorial service for retired 1st Sgt. Donald A. Quarles, 79, Lawton, will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Jerry Shepherd, pastor, Vineyard Christian Fellowship, officiating.

Sgt. Quarles died Saturday, March 5, 2005 at his home.

Inurnment with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin.

He was born July 21, 1925, in West Frankfort, Ill., to Thomas and Stella Butler Quarles.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943-1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1947 and served during World War II in the South Pacific. He was also a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

He married Matsuko Yamaguchi in Tokyo on July 2, 1951.

During his military career, he was stationed at Camp Drew, Japan; Fort Bliss, Texas; Camp Drake, Japan; Fort Riley, Kan.; Fort Carson, Colo.; Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; and Fort Sill in 1966.

He retired in 1973 from the Army and made Lawton his home. In 1974, he became the chief engineer in the mechanical HVAC department ad Cameron University before retiring in 1989.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law: Michael Thomas Quarles and Mary, Jay Dee Quarles and Vanda and Roy Lee Quarles and Priscilla, all of Lawton; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Quarles-Schoonover and Brian, Mililani, Hawaii; eight grandchildren: April Wright and her husband, Joey, Sterling; Lee Quarles, Denver; Cole Quarles, Denton, Texas; Camille Quarles, Duluth, Minn.; Melissa Quarles and Jason Quarles, both of Lawton; and Shane and Bastian Schoonover, both of Mililani; a great-grandson, Seth Quarles; a great-granddaughter, Morgan Wright; two nieces: Charlotte and Wanda, both of Florida; and special relatives: Patty Quarles, Germany; and Pat and Andrea Knight, Splendora, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Orb; and three sisters: Cleta, Leota and Mary Lou.
