Bruce Smallwood

Funeral service for Bruce Smallwood, 86, Elgin, will be Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Fletcher with Jim Hall, Rev. A.L. Swagerty, and Rev. Rodney Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at the Fletcher Cemetery under the direction of the Fletcher Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Fletcher Funeral Home. The Family will greet friends on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Mr. Smallwood passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2010 in Lawton.

Bruce was born on September 22, 1923, in Maude, Oklahoma, to Worley Grandville and Vina Mae [Douthit] Smallwood.

In 1925 the family moved to a farm four miles north of Apache and lived in the Stecker, Caddo County, Oklahoma, area until 1933 when they bought the farm three miles north of Fletcher.

Bruce attended school in Stecker and later Cyril, Ok, where he graduated in May 1942.

He was employed at the Fletcher Creamery until 1944, when he went to work for Carl Malone at Malone Motor Company, Fletcher, OK. In 1950 Bruce went to work for civil service at Fort Sill, OK. Bruce retired from civil service in 1980 as supervisor over the combat Vehicle Shop.

Since then he has enjoyed his retirement by traveling, hunting, working with his dogs, working in their yard and "piddling" around with lawnmowers.

Bruce was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fletcher, where he became a Christian in 1955 and later served in various capacities, including helping with the structure of the church building.

He was a past member of the International Organization of the Odd-Fellows and had also served on the Fletcher Town Board.

Bruce married Irma Jean [Halbrooks] Smallwood at the Fletcher Baptist parsonage on Harper Street on March 6, 1943. Bruce and Irma Jean lived in Fletcher since 1944 where they have made and shared many happy memories. Bruce and Irma were married for 62 years when Irma passed away on June 7, 2004.

Bruce met Charlotte Zisman Ball at the Nutrition Center in Elgin. After three or four months they were crowned Valentine's Day King and Queen. The couple married on July 6, 2007. For the next three years she remained his Queen.

He is survived by 2 sons: Bruce D. Smallwood and his wife Velma of Elgin, and Clifton Smallwood and his wife Cathy of White Oak, TX; 2 daughters: Aleta Kay McNichols of Fletcher, and Debra J. Fannie and her husband Scott of McAlester; 7 grandchildren: Christine "Christy" (Baker) Jenson, El Reno, Darrel Baker, Elgin, Amalia "Molly" McNichols, Fletcher, Emily "Emy" Smallwood, Lawton, Nathan Kendall, Henderson, TX, and Cara and Claire Smallwood, both of White Oak TX ; and 5 great grandchildren: Jordon and Justin Jenson of El Reno, Dakotah and Loni Jane Baker of Fletcher, and Aidan Kendall, Weatherford, TX.

He was preceded in death by his wife Irma Jean Smallwood; parents: W.G. and Vina Mae Smallwood; 4 brothers: Clarence Smallwood, Lawrence Smallwood, Grover Smallwood, and Charlie Smallwood; and 2 sisters: Eva Scrabough and Ruby King.
