Rose Carol Owens Mahaffey

Rose Carol Mahaffey was born on June 18, 1938 in Harper County, OK to John W. Sr. and Lena [Broniman] Owens. She died on February 28, 2013 at her home in Indiahoma with her family at her side. She was 74.

Carol was raised and attended school at Ft Supply, OK. After graduation, she attended North Western University in Alva where she met and married William M. "Bill" Mahaffey.

Carol and Bill lived at several Air Force bases over the next 20 years as well as spending 7 years in England during this time. They retired to the Cache area in 1977 which allowed Carol to finish her education at Cameron University where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in home economics; however, she chose not to enter the work force until her children had all left home. Carol eventually taught at Grandfield and later at Indiahoma where she retired in 1995. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, scrapbooking, sewing, and feeding her cardinals. BUT, her favorite times were spent cooking for her family and spoiling her grandkids!

Carol had been a member of Wichita Baptist Church since they moved in the area.

Over the past year, Carol has fought a courageous battle with cancer and even on her death bed, remembered the words of Job, and never blamed God for her suffering. This belief gave her the strength to accept the inevitability of death, but to anticipate with acceptance the promise of everlasting life.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John Owens Jr; a brother in law, Robert D. Mahaffey, and a nephew, John Mahaffey.

Survivors include her husband for over 54 years, Bill Mahaffey; 3 sons, David O. Mahaffey of Buffalo, OK, Donald M. Mahaffey and wife Anne of Cache, and William M. Mahaffey of Rogers, AR; a daughter, Lena M. Gwinn and husband Dennis of Ralls, TX; a step-daughter, Diana G. Blackwell and husband Shawn of Beaumont, TX; grandchildren, Brian Huddleston and wife Kari of Farmington, NM, John Robert Mahaffey of Cache, OK, Charles Monroe Gwinn of Ralls, TX, Gena Benson of Canton, OK, and Justin Benson in California; a great granddaughter, Brenly Huddleston of Farmington; a sister, Marcella Champ and husband Frank of Ardmore; 2 brothers, Ronnie Owens and wife Laveta of Woodward, OK and Sonny Owens and wife Ardith of Phoenix, AZ; 2 brother in laws, Kenneth "Frisco" Mahaffey and Jerry Mahaffey; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and a wonderful church family.

The Mahaffeys suggest that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Carol's name to Promised Care Hospice whose nurses and home health professionals, especially Marla, Kathy and Deanna, helped make Carol more comfortable in her final days.
