Funeral services for Ellie Carnes Pickens, a longtime Coalgate resident, were held Friday, January 23, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Brown's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Virginia Espinoza officiating. Burial was in Lone Star Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Brown's Funeral Service of Coalgate.

Ms. Pickens was born April 4, 1924 in Centrahoma, OK to Ellis Carnes, Sr. and Alice Perry Carnes and passed away January 20, 2009 in Coalgate at the age of 84. She attended school at Mowdy and Cairo, was a homemaker and a member of the Lone Star Church. She married A. J. Pickens on November 16, 1942 in Caney, OK. He preceded her in death on December 15, 1993.

Survivors include one son Eugene Pickens and wife Rebecca of Coalgate; daughters, Christine Pickens of the home and Vangie Robinson and husband Roy Robinson, Jr. of Boswell, OK; sisters, Catherine Williams and husband Duward of Stuart, OK, Louise Ott and husband Virgil of Coalgate, and Elizabeth Smith of Atoka; brothers, Wilburn Shields and wife Bobbie of McAlester and Ellis Carnes, Jr. of Coalgate; granddaughters, Kimberly Holcomb and friend Riley Hawthorne of Coalgate, Pacalie PIckens of Krebs and Puchi Pickens and Damien Hearst of McAlester; great-grandchildren, Ashen and Octavia Pickens of Krebs; daughter-in-law Sherry Pickens of McAlester; special grandson, Gary Hensley of Coalgate; aunt Maggie Anderson of Coalgate; along with numerous other relatives and many dear and loved friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ellis Carnes, Sr.; mother, Alice Falota; husband, A.J. Pickens, Sr.; son, A. J. Pickens, Jr.; grandson, Timothy Pickens; sister, Julia Mae Homer; brothers, Amos Edwin Carnes, LeRoy John, and Lenard John.

Casketbearers were Gary Hensley, David John, Brandon Cole, Adam Cole, Ernest Cole, Paul Peckio. Honorary bearers were James Frazier, Virgil Ott, Vincent Ott, Mel Ott, Mike Hensley, Duard Williams, Louis Williams, Terry Cole, Edward Mayer, and Johnny D. Ward.
