Shirley Forthman Rucker, nee Seyler, was born in Florida on October 1, 1931. She attended Baylor University, Southern Methodist University and earned her Bachelor in Special Education at East Texas State University. She also earned a Master's Degrees in Education and Guidance and Counseling from East Texas State. While at SMU, she met her first husband, Hugh Forthman. Together, they had six children: Daniel Hugh, Roxanne, Dianne Lee, Penny Grimes, Sanda Seyler, and Paul DuBose. Hugh and Sanda were taken from her in a tragic car accident. In 1990, she met Colonel Sid Rucker, her partner and companion for the rest of her life. They were married in 1993, and for many years, travelled around the country engaging in their shared passion of wildlife photography. They specialized in photographing hummingbirds, being featured in books, calendars, magazines, and even television. When health issues prevented further traveling, they put down roots in Boerne, Texas to be near children and grandchildren.

Shirley passed away on May 21, 2016, surrounded by her loved ones. She is survived by her husband, Sid, sons, Daniel and Paul, stepson, Craig, and daughters, Roxanne, Dianne and Penny, as well as 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
