© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma Wednesday, April 8, 1959 July 17, 1828 ~ November 30, 1933 Word has been received by relatives In and around Maquoketa of the death of Mrs Thomas Welch, Sr, better known to all as Grandma or Aunt Catherine Welch, she having passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 30. at the home of her son Bish near Eakley, Oklahoma at the ripe old age of 106 years, 4 months and 18 days. She wag born July 17, 1828, a daughter of Armstrong Hawkins and wife, pioneers of Esgate community. She leaves to monr her passing five sons, Thomas, Dave, Bish and Will of Oklahoma and Arch of Canada; two daughters, Florence Eckambrack of Oklahoma and Anna Hastings of Clinton, Iowa. Mr and Mrs Hastinsg were at the mother's bedside throughout her Last illness. Her oldest daughter, Mrs Hershal Miller passed away March 21, 1931, at the age of 74 years. A younger daughter Lottie passed away about 41 years ago at the age of 9 years. Grandma Welch was the eldest child of a family of 15, all of whom have preceded her in death except two, Mrs Cornell Brown of Marion, Iowa and Armstrong Hawkins of Monona, Iowa. She also leaves a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends. Tom, Clarence, Stephen and Don Miller, also Mrs Ada Roush all of Maquoketa, are grandchildren; John, Wylie and Lyrnan Wilson also of Maquoketa are nephews. Grandma Welch passed through many hardships. Her parents were stricken with that dreadful epidemic that took a heavy toll in the Esgate community 65 years ago,called Gastric fever. Grandma was a good kind neighbor and friend, loved by all who knew her. |
© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma Wednesday, April 8, 1959 June 9, 1873 ~ April 4, 1959 Former Carnegie Woman Dies; Rites Held At Apache Funeral services for Mrs. Bish Welch, Apache, former Carnegie resident, were held Monday afternoon in the Pentecostal Holiness church at Apache. Burial was made in the Binger cemetery. Mrs. Welch, a resident of Caddo county since 1902, died early Saturday morning at an Anadarko hospital where she had been the past two weeks. Her husband is also critically ill in the hospital at Anadarko. She was born June 9, 1873, in Moquoketa, Iowa. She first resided in the Gracemont and Binger communities and later in Eakly. She and her husband came to Carnegie about 22 years ago and made their home here until about five years ago when they moved to Apache. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Irma Morris, Canada; three grandchildren including David Welch of Garden City, Kansas, and Mrs. Minnie Cash, Apache; and other relatives. |
