Royce Dirl Melton
June 3, 1937 ~ October 17, 2012


Royce D. Melton, CMSGT, USAF, RET, 75, was called home by the Lord on Wednesday, October 17, 2012. He was born June 3, 1937, three miles NW of Ft. Towson, Oklahoma to Wade C. and Edith A. [Pyles] Melton.

His family moved to the Oklahoma City area to work at the new Tinker AFB in July 1944. Royce graduated from Southeast High School in 1956 and gained Civil Service employment in September 1956 at Tinker.

He joined the Air Force Reserve in May 1957 and became an Air Reserve Technician with the 937th Military Airlift Group in 1960. He rose in Rank to CMSGT and Personnel Superintendent by 1966 and then took leave for a year tour in Vietnam in 1967-68 as the Civilian Personnel Officer at Nha Trang Ab, Royce returned to the Air Reserves position at Tinker until he was promoted to Personnel Superintendent at 4th Air Force. CMSGT Melton transferred to the inactive reserve after 25 years of active and reserved duty.

His military decorations include the Meritorius Service Medal, two Air Force Commendation Medals with an Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal and other awards. He returned to Tinker AFB in 1981 as a Personnel Staffing Specialist Civilian Personnel until retiring in 1989.

Royce was a good citizen and a loyal and loving husband, father and friend. He spent his time with family and friends fishing, reading, traveling and playing cards.

Royce is survived by his wife of 20 years. He was married on January 11, 1992 to Connie Rhea [Murrow] Melton of the home. Royce is also loved by his three step daughters: Sandra Chambers; Michelle Bailey and husband, Ryan and Jennifer Seger and husband, Christian. He has four Grandchildren, whom he loves dearly: Samuel Bingham, Stephanie and Eric Chambers and Kaleb Seger all of Harrah,Oklahoma.

He is also survived by his brother, Bobby Melton and wife, Linda of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, extended family members, Aunt Mae Smith of Pima, Arizona, many beautiful nieces, cousins and a nephew, Stephen Chambers, the excellent father of Stephanie and Eric; Jason Bingham, the excellent father of Samuel and countless other family and life long friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Donnie Melton, previous wife, Peggy J. Melton and Uncle Dillard Smith of Pima, Arizona.

Royce and his family especially are thankful for the care and friendship provided by Dr. Jerome Mathias, Dr. Wudeneh Zewdie, along with the staff and friends of the DaVita Dialysis Center of Midwest City.

Royce's family would like to invite you to join us in remembering him this Saturday, October 20, 2012 @ 10:00 A.M at the Delaware Tribal Court House.

Military Grave Side Service will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Murray Cemetery in Binger, Oklahoma, by the Military Honor Team under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home in Anadarko, Oklahoma.
