Nancy J. [Carpenter]. Roberson

After a life as a dedicated wife, loving mother and adoring grandmother, Nancy J. Roberson passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 in Anadarko, Oklahoma.

Nancy was born April 13, 1929 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to W.A. and Mildred Carpenter.<

She attended school in Muskogee, graduating from Muskogee High School. Nancy attended Sullins Woman's College in Bristol, Virginia before transferring to the University of Oklahoma. She graduated with a BA in Journalism receiving the Gamma Alpha Chi Award for outstanding senior women in advertising.

Nancy was initiated into Chi Omega sorority at OU and served for many years as alumnae advisor. Nancy worked for the University of Oklahoma school paper and for KOCY radio station in Oklahoma City.<

She completed one year of graduate school before being named Advertising Manager for Rothchild's Department Store in Oklahoma City.

Nancy married her high school sweetheart Arvin C. Roberson at Grace Episcopal Church on August 23, 1952 in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Dr. and Mrs. Roberson lived in Oklahoma City before moving to Anadarko in 1956.

They had three children, Michael, Kathryn and David.

Mrs. Roberson was very active in her community. She served as a Camp Fire leader for 12 years and served as president of the Camp Fire Leaders Association. As a leader, Nancy guided her group from Beautiful Blue Birds through Camp Fire Girls and onto Tu-Nes-Kut-Nun Horizon Group.

After their graduation, she accompanied her "girls" on a trip to Florida, a trip the girls financed through four years of fundraisers.

As a 30-year life member of the Anadarko Philomathic Club, she served as president and was co-chair of the committee responsible for the Philomathic Museum's move to the Rock Island Depot.

Nancy also served on the Anadarko Community Library Board for 27 years, working diligently during the library's move to its present location.

She served on numerous other boards and was a founding member and past president of the Anadarko Historical Society. She was co-chair of the membership committee for the National Hall of Fame for Famous American Indians and was named Outstanding Woman of the year in 1973.

Nancy was honored to be a member of P.E.O., serving three terms as president. She became a Golden Girl, a 50 year member in P.E.O., in 2009.

Nancy was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, serving for many years as Sunday school teacher at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Chickasha.

With her husband, family and friends, Nancy traveled extensively. She always enjoyed exploring and meeting people of other cultures. She passed this love of travel on to her children and grandchildren. Also a great fan of Oklahoma University football, Nancy was a season ticket holder for more than 50 years.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, A.C. Roberson, J.D., and one grandson, Nathan A. Painter.

She is survived by her son, Michael Roberson and his wife Rose of Anadarko, Kathryn Painter and husband Paul of The Woodlands, TX and son David Roberson of Tulsa, OK.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Matthew Roberson and wife Kearstin, Kristin Roberson, Austin Roberson, Carson Painter, Kaitlyn Painter, William Roberson, Thomas Roberson, Andrew Roberson and James Roberson.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 3, 10:00 A.M. Memory Lane Cemetery. Officiating: Rev. Susan Lindley. Services under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Anadarko, OK.
