Olen Eugene Monroe

Olen Eugene Monroe, 88, of Blanchard, formerly of Anadarko, died Tuesday, October 14, 2014, in Blanchard. The son of Alton and Alma Lois [Heavin] Monroe, he was born July 30, 1926 in Cement, Oklahoma.

Olen attended school at Verden and Fort Cobb and graduated in 1947 from Fort Cobb High School.

He honorably served in the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed in Hawaii.

Olen married Donice Lea Jacks on August 27, 1949 and to this union five children were born.

After their marriage, Olen worked at the Anadarko Nugrape plant for his mother and father-in-law and later worked for Standard Oil Company. The family lived in several states before coming back home and settling in Anadarko. He then went to work for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation in Anadarko until his retirement.

In his spare time, Olen enjoyed gardening, working in his yard, fishing and camping with his family and friends, and playing golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years, Donice L. Monroe; and one granddaughter, Kara Lea Griffith.

He is survived by his five children, Don E. "Opie" Monroe, John Monroe and his wife, Liz, both of Norman, Nancy Griffith and her husband, Kris of Blanchard, Sheri Miller of Blanchard and Ann Roark and her husband, Kevin, of Blanchard; eleven grandchildren, James Monroe, Kristin Griffith, both of Norman, Kyle Griffith and his wife, Sarah, of Edmond, Kreg Griffith and his wife, Libby, of Washington, Oklahoma, Kim Whyatt and her husband, Joseph, of Norman, Shon Downes of Chickasha, Shane Downes and his wife, Jennifer, of Verden, Alicia Rogers and her husband, Nick, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Todd Roark of Oklahoma City, Jairus Roark and his wife, Jamie, of Edmond, David Roark and his wife, Taylor, of Garland, Texas; nine great grandchildren, Sheldon Downes of Walters, Terra Downes, Tyler Downes, both of Verden, Anna Rogers, Nash Rogers, both of Waxahachie, Kyan Griffith of Washington, Caroline Griffith of Edmond, Leigh Roark of Garland, Texas and Greyson Roark of Edmond; four sisters, Valerie Wingate of Texas, Annabelle Weaver of Del City, Carolyn Wilkinson and her husband, Edwin, of Tulsa, and Della Bramblett of Pocasset; two brothers, Vernon Monroe and his wife, Wynne, of Florida and Alvin Monroe and his wife, Jean of Konawa; and many other loved ones and friends.

Funeral service will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Blanchard. Burial will be at 3:00 P.M., Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Memory Lane Cemetery in Anadarko. Arrangements are under the direction of Eisenhour Funeral Home of Blanchard.
