Viola Bernice [Baker] Haney

Viola Bernice HaneyIt is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Mother, Viola Bernice Haney, age 84. She died in her home in Chickasha, OK. June 1, 2009.

The funeral service to celebrate Viola's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2009 at Grand Assembly of God, Chickasha, OK. Reverend Larry Hatfield will officiate.

Viola was born the daughter of Thomas William Baker and Ethel Lou [Blackburn] Baker on February 13, 1925 in Gracemont, OK.

She attended Gracemont High School. Her favorite activities were basketball, tap dancing, sewing, quilting and singing at the Assembly of God Church. Viola's hand-quilted works of art have been displayed at Anadarko Indian Exhibition, Oklahoma City Exhibition, and the Colorado East Morgan County 20th Annual Quilt Show.

Viola met the love of her life, Otis Haney, at their side by side mailboxes in Gracemont. Their courtship was interrupted by World War II when Otis enlisted in the Navy. While on a 6 day leave, Viola and he were married June 26, 1943.

After the war ended, Viola quit her job at Pioneer Telephone Company in Lawton to join Otis in Corpus Christi until he was discharged. Otis's work with PSO took them to Cornville, Washita, and to retirement in Anadarko. They moved to Chickasha in 1991.

In Gracemont and Anadarko, she was a member of the Assembly of God Churches.

While raising her family, she was an active member of the Grady County Home Demonstration Club and Redi Kilowatt Club. Of all her accomplishments, she considered her family the greatest treasure and legacy.

Viola was preceded in death by Otis Haney, her loving husband of 48 years, her parents Tom and Ethel Baker, and sister Betty Jo.

Viola leaves behind to cherish her memory her five children and their families: Daughter and husband, Linda and Paul Feltz and their children Glen Harrison and wife Janice, and John Feltz. Daughter Frances Zerger and husband Waldo and their two children Anne Jacobs and husband Noel, and Brian Zerger and wife Susan. Viola's Sons: Jim Haney and wife Vickie and his children Cherice Haney, Andrea Rhodes and husband Greg, Jacob Haney, and Vickie's children Mikki Penner and husband Brady, and Candice Williams. Viola's second son is Tommy Haney and wife Debbie with his children Casey Haney and Charity Haney. Viola's youngest daughter is Lisa Davenport and husband Dan. Great-Grandchildren who mourn the loss of their Grandmother are as follows: Daniel, Rachel, and Michel Rhodes; Beth and Abby Zerger, Sarah and Keegan Jacobs, Riley Haney, and Lachlan Penner. Surviving Siblings are: Orlen Baker, Pat Baker and wife Ruby, Laquetta Anne Hansen and husband Ken, and Janet Rainey and husband Don. Sisters and brothers in-law: Audra and Lester Hunt, Delores and Art Lanham, Ruby Haney, and J.R. and Jean Haney.

The family is so grateful for the many friends who have offered prayers and support during this time of need.

Interment will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery in Anadarko, OK. under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
