Hattie A. [Green] Hand

Death by Fire

Woman and Two children Burned to Death by Prairie Fire

A sad tragedy occurred Monday afternoon about twelve miles north of Anadarko on Sugar Creek by which a woman and two little children met death by fire.

Mrs. Hand and her two little children, a girl aged 3 years and a boy 18 months old had been left at home. The father and husband came to town with a load of wood.

During the afternoon a prairie fire broke out to the south of the Hand homestead and a strong wind drove it rapidly towards their dwelling. Mrs. Hand saw it coming, and started with her two children across the prairie to a neighbor's house for protection. But she was too late; the cruel flames overtook her and soon she and her two little ones were a mass of charred flesh.
