Betty Jo [Schroder] Haines was born September 4, 1925 to Guy and Vivian [Hall] Schroder. She passed away Friday, August 18, 2006 at the Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City, OK at the age of 80.

Betty graduated from Hinton High School. She worked at Tinker Air Force Base during WWII. She was united in marriage to John Calvin Haines September 20, 1950 in Wheeler, TX, he preceded her in death November 28, 2004 in Oklahoma City, OK.

Betty worked at the Hinton Soil Conservation then moved to Stillwater and worked for the Oklahoma State Soil Conservation Headquarters retiring in 1976. Betty then moved back to the farm in Hydro to farm with her husband Calvin and started her quilting career. She was an award winning quilter and early modern era promoter for today's quilter, she is acknowledged as the founder in 1980 of the Central Oklahoma Quilters Guild, which maintains a membership of over 400. She was the inspiration, motivator and COQG Project Coordinator for collecting original copies of the 1068 quilt patterns that appeared in the Kansas City Star Newspaper from 1928 through 1961, which are available for study and use. Under her guidance an individual quilt block was made of each different pattern and these are available for loan to quilt shows throughout the United States. Under her direction the patterns were also printed in booklet form. During the late 1980's she was one of the ten guild members of the Oklahoma Heritage project who traveled the state to register and photograph over 4000 quilts made prior to 1940. Information and the history of these quilts are available through the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Vivian Schroder, husband Calvin Haines, son, Dusty Ruston, and one sister, Elloise Ballou.

She is survived by one grandson, Darren Guy Ruston and his wife Melissa of El Reno, OK; and two great-granddaughters, Karli Jo and Kenzie Rae Ruston of El Reno, OK.

Graveside services will be held at Bridgeport-Graceland Cemetery, Tuesday 10:00 am, August 22, 2006, Hinton, OK, under the direction of the Hinton-Turner Funeral Home, Hinton, OK with Rev. Scott Hamilton officiating.
