Herbert J. Hemming
February 20, 1918 ~ June 1, 2021


Herbert J. Hemming, of Apache, Oklahoma, was born February 20, 1918 in Broxton, Oklahoma to Joseph Lawrence and Ida Helen [Nocker] Hemming. He passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at the age of 103 in Lawton.

Viewing will be Thursday, June 3, from 9:00A.M. to 7:00P.M. and Friday, June 4, from 9:00A.M. to 12:00P.M. at Crews Funeral Home in Apache. Funeral services will be Friday, June 4, at 2:00P.M. at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Apache, with Father Rayanna Narisetti officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Crews Funeral Home.

Herb attended Alden schools and Central Catholic High School. He owned a farm where he raised cattle, wheat and cotton. During wheat harvest time, he would harvest from Oklahoma to Montana. He was elected to the Apache Farmers Co-op Board in 1973 and appointed president in 1979, a position he held for 6 years. He retired from the board in 1985. He loved to raise a garden and did so until he was 102. At 103, he still drove a vehicle and had amazing penmanship. He was a member of the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church and served as their bookkeeper. He also helped to rebuild the steeple at the church after it burned and he mowed the church lawn for many years. He read The Anadarko Daily News, The Lawton Constitution, and The Apache News daily/weekly. Herb enjoyed playing dominoes and won many championships trophies. He loved to do woodworking/cabinetry projects and repairing guns and fishing poles. Herb also enjoyed deer hunting and had traveled to New Mexico to hunt. He enjoyed his friend, Jed Denton, who came frequently to visit him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Janet Hemming; brothers George Hemming, John Hemming, James Hemming, Edward Hemming; and stepsons, Wayne Hudgins and Jerry Hudgins.

Herb is survived by his stepchildren: Lois and husband Myron Murray of Marlow and Jane Bradford of Asotin, Washington; 4 grandchildren including Brian Murray and Karin and husband Bryan Brantley, all of Marlow; 6 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Janet H. [Hancock] Hemming
September 23, 1923 ~ May 10, 2011


Janet Hemming of Apache, Oklahoma was born September 23, 1923 southeast of Alden in rural Caddo County to Thomas and Oma Jones Hancock. She passed away May 10th in Lawton, OK at the age of 87.

She was married to Robert Hudgins. To this union, 3 children were born. They were divorced. She lived in Oregon and worked at Roseburg Lumber in their Plywood Division.

She later moved back to Apache and married A.J. Maguire in 1969. He preceded her in death August 26, 1979.1st She then married Herbert Joseph Hemming on March 2, 1982 in Apache, OK.

Janet was a founding member of the Apache VFW Auxiliary. She was a member of the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church where she also served as president of the Ladies Guild.

She enjoyed sewing and especially loved to work in her flower gardens.

She is survived by: Her husband, Herb, of the home2 sons and their wives - Wayne and Vickie Hudgins Highland, CA, Jerry and Jeanette Hudgins Clarkston, WA, 1 daughter - Jane Bradford Clarkston, WA, 1 stepson and his wife - Jim and Dee Maguire Apache, OK, 1 stepdaughter and her husband - Lois and Myron Murray Apache, OK, 6 grandchildren-Kathy Skidmore, Diane Dubois, Billy Hudgins, Tammy Edmondson, Debbie Phelps and Sami Hudgins, 2 step-grandchildren - Brian Murray and Karin Brantley, 6 Great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren, 2 Great-great grandchildren, 1 brother and his wife - Vernon and Gene Hancock Stillwell, OK, 1 sister - Muriel Bucher Dennison, TX.

She was preceded in death by: Her parents, 1 step-son - Don Maguire, 2 brothers - Alvis Hancock and Avery Hancock, 4 sisters - Edith Carr, Thelma Smith and 2 sisters who died in infancy.

A Wake service will be held Friday, May 13th at 7:00 P.M. at the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church with Deacon Tom Biles officiating. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, May 14th at 10:00 A.M. at the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church with Father Madineni Prakash officiating.

Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Crews Funeral Home
