Emma Adaline [Haney] Crow
June 12, 1862 ~ November 2, 1943

Emma Adeline Hayney was born in Montague, Montague County, Texas on June 12, 1862.

She was the middle daughter of Joseph Brewer Hayney and Sarah Ann [Wheeler] Haney.

Her older sister was Nancy Elizabeth "Nannie" Haney. Her younger sister, Mary Louisa "Ida", also known as Ido, married Charles Sterling, a former Texas Ranger and cattleman, for whom the town of Sterling, Oklahoma is named.

Emma married Edward Lothra "Ed" Crow on October 25, 1876 in Montague, Montague County, Texas.

Emma and Ed lived in Montague when they were first married. There they had six children: Etta, George Edward, Ernie Alice, Charles Fredrick "Fred", M. Sylvester "Slim", and James Sterling "Jim" Sterling. Their oldest daughter, Etta, died when she was only 9 months old.

Emma stayed in Montague when Ed moved to Duncan, Indian Territory, 1891. There he purchased two lots on Main Street where the Wade Hotel in Duncan is now located. Ed also purchased several acres of grassland just west of Duncan, and built a small two-story house.

In 1892, Emma and their five living children move from Montague, Texas to live with him in Duncan. While living in Duncan, Ed and Emma had five more children. They were Fie Dennis, Ida Sarah, William Byran "Bill", Robert Dee "Bob", and John Lothra.

They moved from Duncan to a 160 acre homestead in the Wichita Mountains near Meers in 1902.

In March 1902, Emma gave birth to twin boys, Hillard and Lillard. The twins lived only a few hours and were buried near an oak grove almost in the center of the family homestead.

Andrew Monroe "Andy" was born on May 3, 1903, being named after his Uncle. Andy never knew his father who died only three months after Andy was born. Andy was raised by his mother and his older siblings.

Ed was killed on August 6, 1903, during a tragic farming accident. The family buried Ed in the beside the twin brothers in the Crow Cemetery there on the family homestead.

After the death of Ed in 1903, Emma and the children continued to work the 160 acre family homestead northwest of Meers, Oklahoma. It finally became too much for Emma. She sold the land in 1913 and moved the family to Apache where she purchased a home on the north end of Oak Street.

Emma received a government pension of $12.00 per month retroactive to March 1917 as a Indian Wars widow due to Ed's time as a Texas Ranger back in 1874 through 1875. Times were hard. Emma's children held various jobs in town. George Edward Crow worked for Warren "Skinny" Smith, as general handyman at Smith's Drugstore. Fred was a painter and paperhanger as well as a volunteer fireman. Sylvester "Slim" Crow was a teller of tall tales, coon hunter and deputy policeman in Apache for a time. Fie Dennis Crow sold tombstones. William Bryan "Bill" Crow and John Lothra Crow both found work on the railroad. The youngest son, Andy, became a shoe cobbler and gunsmith.

Emma was known for her light sourdough biscuits that she cooked on a kerosene stove. Emma was an expert needlewoman, in the days when you did tatting, embroidery work, and quilting. She made quilt tops out of the Bull Durham tobacco pouches that the men discarded after "rolling their own" cigarettes.

Emma passed away quietly at home on November 2, 1943 at the age of 81 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Apache.
