Hershel Jack Claborn
March 29, 1928 ~ May 15, 2016

Hershel Jack Claborn of Apache, Oklahoma passed away Sunday, May 15, 2016 in Chickasha, OK.

Jack was born March 29, 1928 in rural Caddo County to Haywood Tanner and Martha Miller Claborn. He was the last surviving child of eleven children in the family and was considered by many as the "patriarch" of the Claborn family.

He attended school through the 8th grade.

He married Lorene Beard on July 30, 1949 in Henryetta, TX. They were married for 65 years. Jack and Lorene were members of the Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church in Apache and were baptized together on September 15, 2013.

As a young man, Jack traveled with family to California to work. After Jack and Lorene were married, they moved to west Texas to work in the cotton fields. Returning to Oklahoma, he began a career working on the railroad with the Rock Island and Katy railroads for over forty years. He worked for Dolese Bros. at the Richards Spur Quarry maintaining their railroad track and operating the train locomotive for ten years and retired in 1990.

Jack loved retirement and was busy with many different activities. He operated a bulldozer for Forrest Loflin, building ponds and terraces on many area farms. Jack owned and operated a watermelon and cantaloupe stand on the north side of Apache for many years. He was well known for the quality of his melons and guaranteed each one of them to be sweet and tasty! He also enjoyed having his grandchildren and great-grandchildren assist him in selling watermelons.

Jack was famous for making hot sauce and enjoyed providing friends and family with jars of his specialty.

Jack began a project of making white crosses for unmarked graves at Fairview Cemetery in Apache. He would eventually make and place over 140 crosses.

Jack was honored as Apache Citizen of the Year in 2007 for this contribution to the community. He was also featured on KFOR's "Is This a Great State or What." Jack was a renowned dowser and was reputed to have never missed and never charged for finding water for land owners to drill water wells. He often used his dowsing skills to predict the sex of babies and find lost items.

Jack delighted in taking his grandchildren to the junk sale in Anadarko during the summers. He would annually set up a large market of antiques and &valuables at the Rattlesnake Festival each year. He loved to practice the &art of trading and would often have more items than he sold at the end of the festival.

Jack loved to play poker and would meet with family weekly to enjoy a friendly card game. He loved to create, from designing and building items to make life easier such as a can smasher and many different types of traps, to whittling wood into intricate designs and piecing together a metal man from various old metal tools and junk iron. Jack and his longtime friend, Dan, spent many hours searching for and researching about buried treasure in the area. While they never actually found any, they were positive about its existence. Jack entertained family and friends with stories from his life experiences. He had a remarkable memory about the past and provided detailed accounts which included exact dates.

An aspiring author from Medicine Park met with Jack on numerous occasions and made audio recordings of his stories. She drafted a book about his life that he was very proud of and wanted everyone to read.

Jack is survived by three sons, Jackie Claborn, Rodney Claborn and wife Kathe, and Cleve Claborn, all of Apache OK; eight grandchildren: Brad and Irina Claborn of Little Elm, TX; Brandon and Kym Claborn of Claremore, OK; Heath Claborn of El Reno, OK; Justin Jack and Sybil Claborn of Oklahoma City, OK; Reshelle Claborn of Hopewell, VA; Lindy Gibson of Chickasha OK; Crystal and Nick Seibert of Apache, OK; and Abrey Fowler of Apache, OK; sixteen great-grandchildren: Danielle Claborn of Texas; Kenlee and Ella Claborn of Claremore, OK; Tycie and Luke Claborn of El Reno, OK; Nola and Camille Claborn of Oklahoma City, OK; Jordan and Bailey Claborn of Hopewell, VA; Logan, Gavin and Alyssa Woodard of Chickasha, OK; Tyler and Emerie Keeling and RJ and Isaac Seibert of Apache, OK. He attended Apache Public Schools. He had great aspirations to become a coach. He was still in high school when he married Elaine Korkoski and they had two daughters: Mary Jo and Melody. She was killed in a car wreck on Nov. 17,1969. That day was forever a sad day in his life. Marion moved in with his parents so they could help him raise his girls. He had many other family members who helped too.

He married Connie Alena Neal on April 21, 1972. They had a baby girl named Mistie Julayne Claborn. She was killed in a car wreck on July 19,1977, at age 4. He carried her picture in the front of his billfold till the day he died. He always called her his little Angel.

He later went on to Southwestern University receiving his Master's Degree in Educational Administration. He coached for 32 years in many towns too numerous to list. He was also a high school principal in several schools. He was the only coach we know that started three high school programs in Oklahoma; Elgin, Cement and Lawton Christian.
