© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma Wednesday, Mar. 24, 1948 Henry Stewart Sturgis Sturgis Rites Set For 2 p.m. Friday Methodist Church H. S. Sturgis, 84, pioneer settler in the Alden community, died Tuesday after an illness of 10 days. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and was taken to Mercy hospital in Oklahoma City. He was returned to the Carnegie hospital last Saturday. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Methodist church with arrangements in charge of the Pitcher Funeral Home. Rev. Chas. P.D. Mann, pastor, will preach the sermon, Mr. Sturgis was a member of the church. Burial will be in the Carnegie cemetery. Henry Stewart Sturgis was born at Fairfield, Iowa June 10, 1864. His parents moved to Kirksville, Mo. when he was about 16 years old. He was married to Mary Helen Wilson Dec. 29, 1886. They moved to Kansas about 1898 and lived there until they came to Oklahoma in 1901. In the opening of the country they drew a farm 10 miles south of Carnegie and lived there until 1908 when they moved to Enid. They returned to Carnegie in 1918 and bought a home here in the city. Mrs. Sturgis died Oct. 9, 1930. Mr. Sturgis was married to Mrs. Ida Woolf Nov. 15, 1935. Survivors are the wife, Mrs. Ida Sturgis of the home; three daughters, Mrs,. Bessie Hartman, Norman; Mrs. S.H. Cowl, Carnegie, and Mrs. Alice Colbert, Globe, Ariz. and three sons, Raymon of St. Louis, Maurice of Enid and Lester of Wellington, Kan. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. All members of the family are here except Raymond and Lester and they will be here for the funeral Friday. |
© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma October 9, 1930 Mary Helen [Wilson] Sturgis Mary Helen Wilson was born near Kirkville, Mo., June 7, 1869, and departed this life October 9, 1930, at her home in Carnegie, Okla. Her age is 64 years, 4 months and 2 days. On December 29, 1886, she was united in marriage to Henry S. Sturgis, who survives her. To this happy union, which death has severed after 44 years, six children were born, all of whom are living. In 1898 the Sturgis family left the old home in Missouri and came to Kansas. Then in 1902 another moved was made, this time to Oklahoma at the opening of the Indian Territory. The old homestead is 10 miles south of Carnegie. Since coming to Oklahoma Among the first early settlers, Mr. and Mrs. Sturgis have resided in Oklahoma. Since 1918 they have lived in Carnegie. At an early age Mrs. Sturgis united with the Trinity Methodist church near Kirkville, Mo. Since then she has been closely associated with the church of her choice, as her health permitted. She has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in Carnegie since coming here twelve years ago. Mrs. Sturgis leaves to mourn her departure her husband, Henry S. Sturgis, and her six children, three sons and three daughters, ten grandchildren and two brothers. The daughters are Mrs. W.C. Hartman, Mrs. S.H. Cowl and Mrs. L.E. Colbert all of Carnegie. The sons are Maurice W. Sturgis of Kaw City, Lester E. Sturgis of Wichita, Kans., and Raymond R. Sturgis of Humansville, Mo. The two brothers are Robert J. Wilson of Greentop, Mr. and James V. Wilson of Connelville, Mo. Besides these immediate relatives there is a host of friends and neighbors. Thru her long illness which lasted for about 11 years, Mrs. Sturgis has been most patient in her suffering. For the last three years she has not been able to walk and for about one and one-half years she could not move. In recent months she has not been able to speak and only with great difficulty could her wants be understood by those who took care of her. All was done for her that love and prayer and medical science could do. When the end came she slipped off peacefully into eternity. The hearts of those who loved her are heavy with sorrow but we are comforted to know that she is with God and rest. Funeral services were held at the Carnegie Methodist church Sunday October 12, 2:30 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. M. Hearn Smith, who preached a most comforting sermon. A splendid male quartet, composed of C.A. Pitcher, Herman A. Morris, C.M. Hartman and Edgar Jacks, sang "Going Down the Valley" and "Abide With Me." A special solo by Mr. Jacks, "There's No Disappointment in Heaven," a favorite song of Mrs. Sturgis during her illness, was beautiful and impressive. Interment was made in the Carnegie cemetery, in charge of Pitcher & Pitcher, funeral directors. |
