Melba Gail [Morrison] Sherwood PhD

Funeral services for Melba Gail Sherwood, PhD, 63, of Carnegie were held Saturday, October 9, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Carnegie with Dr. Richard Tinker officiating.

Melba was born April 19, 1941 in Sayre to Orville A. and Callie O. [Green] Morrison and died Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at her home.

She attended Sayre and Elk City grade schools and Carnegie Junior High. She graduated from Hobart High School in 1958. She graduated from Southwestern State College in Weatherford with a language arts major.

She taught in Lubbock, Texas and Mountain View before earning a Master's degree in Counseling from Southwestern. Melba then moved to Garden City, Kansas where she was a counselor for 13 years. She earned a Specialist in Education degree from Fort Hays, Kansas and then obtained administrative credentials at the University of Kansas.

She served as the Assistant Principal in Joplin, Missouri. Melba worked for the Missouri School Boards Association while obtaining a Doctorate in Education from the University of Missouri. She was an Assistant Professor at Louisiana Tech University and Grambling State University in Louisiana before returning to Carnegie in 1985. In 1992 she became Coordinator of Education Enhancement Services and served as Evening Counselor at Caddo-Kiowa Vocational Technology Center in Fort Cobb. She retired after 39 years in the field of education in 2001. She was an avid reader and a member of the First Christian Church. Melba believed her single most accomplishment was raising her son into a good and decent man.

she is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Jennifer Sherwood of Yellow Springs, Ohio; two grandsons, Andrew and Aaron Sherwood of yellow Springs, Ohio; her mother, Callie O. Morrison of Carnegie and one brother, Charles Morrison and wife Beverly of Houston, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her father, Orville A. Morrison and two brothers, Hershel Morrison and Ronald Morrison.

Burial was in the Carnegie Cemetery under the direction of the Pitcher-Hackney Funeral Home in Carnegie.
