Auba Essie Pennington, third of nine children born to Charles and Zora [Gray] Pennington, was born January 13, 1909 at Mountain View, Oklahoma. She departed this life January 17, 2013 just four days following her 104th birthday.

She moved with her family to Rankin, Oklahoma in Roger Mills County where she began her formal education in a one-room school. That school consolidated with others and was called Rankin where she graduated from high school in 1927. She furthered her education in 1929 attending Central State Teachers College in Edmond where she received her teaching certificate and began her career as an elementary teacher in a two-room country school. She taught school during the winter months and attended summer school until she received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1936. Her teaching career consisted of two years at Sunny Point, ten years at Reydon, four years at Meridian, one year at Magdalena, NM, two years in Clinton and her last twenty-five years were spent teaching second grade at Carnegie School. She retired in 1974 after having taught forty four years.

In 1959, an automobile accident claimed the lives of her sister, Irma and her husband Lynn Womack. Their daughter, Kathy Zo, came to live with Auba. She went through the adoption process and was legally adopted.

Following her retirement, Auba and her mother moved to Watonga where she has continued to live until her health failed and she moved to the Seiling Nursing Center.

Auba was a member of the OEA, OREA, Delta Kappa Gamma, Watonga Book Club, Flower Club and Sewing Club. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading and working in her yard.

She is survived by her adopted daughter, Zo Roy and husband Jim of Vici, two grandchildren, Scott Roy and wife Lauren; Angela Gaynor and husband Ken, four great grandchildren, Emma and Caleb Roy; Nate and Meleah Gaynor, one sister, Evelyn Baker and husband Clifford of Fay and one brother, Pascal Pennington of Fritch, TX. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Irma Womack and five brothers: Parker, Clifford, Dee, Earl and Percy.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2013 at the Watonga Christian Church with Pastor David Johnson, officiating.

Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Carnegie Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the Blaine County Retired Educators or Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority with the Redinger Funeral Home-Box 236-Seiling, OK 73663 serving as custodian of the funds.
