David Beutler ~ Mildred E [Simms] Beutler

Three Weeks' Courtship Reaches Golden Wedding

It started out like this: A crowd of young folds was going in a wagon to a box supper at the schoolhouse. Dave Beutler has his eye on a young lady by the name of Millie Simms, so he took his team and buggy and drove to the supper by himself. He bought Millie's box, liked her cooking as well as he did her looks, took her home from the schoolhouse and in three weeks they were married and on their way to Okarche, Oklahoma in a covered wagon.

That was near McPherson, Kan. in January, 1901, and on Sunday, Jan. 21, 1951, the Beutlers celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in their hoe on North Park avenue in Carnegie. Their children planned and carried out the arrangement for the occasion and selected new wedding rings as their gifts to their parents.

When the Caddo country opened for settlement Aug. 6, 1901, Beutler got the claim on 41 Highway that corners Bethel church on the northeast. In February, 1902, they loaded the wagon in Okarche and came on down to the claim to prove up. In attempting to ford the treacherous South Canadian river at Bridgeport, with a cow tied beside the team and ice in the river, they go stuck in the quicksand, had to unload most of their property and did not got out until late that day when another mover came along with a big team and gave them a pull, not a push.

They have lived in the Carnegie community since 1902 except eight years they farmed near Lone Wolf. Their children are the daughter, Mrs. Edna Braden of Oklahoma City, and three sons, Clarence of south of Mountain View; Menno of Oklahoma City and Gerald of Lone Wolf
