Lonzo Franklin "Lonnie" Battles
1889 ~ 1984


Graveside services for Lonzo Franklin Battles, 94 year old former Superintendent of Schools in Carnegie, Wetumka and Maud, were held Friday, January 27, 1984 at 2:00 p.m. at Carnegie Cemetery in Carnegie, with Rev. Gilbert Brothers officiating. Burial was under the direction of the Lockstone Funeral Home Inc. of Weatherford, Oklahoma.

Mr. Battles was born on August 13, 1889 at Calico Flat, Arkansas and died at the Oklahoma Methodist Manor in Tulsa, OK late Tuesday evening January 24, 1984.

He grew to manhood in Arkansas and on May 13, 1917, he married Naomi Ruth Wallis at Cave City, Ark.

He attended the University of Arkansas and in 1921, they moved to Oklahoma where he finished his schooling at Northeastern State University, and later obtained his masters degree at Oklahoma A&M.

He taught at a number of schools in Oklahoma and was Superintendent of Schools for many years. They later moved to Wewoka, OK where he was Assistant to the County Superintendent of Schools, retiring at Wewoka, OK.

Mr. Battles served for 10 years as Carnegie Superintendent from the fall of 1929 to the spring of 1939.

His wife, Naomi Ruth Battles preceeded him in death in 1977 and he made his home in Tulsa for the past seven years. He was also preceeded in death by a daughter, Eloise Norma Battles.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, and was a Christian, Educator and Family Man whose long life touched many people who will miss him.

Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Methodist Manor, Tulsa, OK.

He is survived by two sons, Wallis Battles, Wallingford, Conn and Rev. Lonzo Battles, Jr., Woodward, Ok. Eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
