Ed S. Okerson Dies Suddenly Sunday

Death came suddenly early Sunday morning to E.S. Okerson, pioneer resident of this community and he passed away at his home on West First street. Altho he had not been ill before he declined to eat breakfast and stepped out on the porch of his home where he died within a few minutes.

Services were held at the Alden Presbyterian church at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Garland Howard of the Carnegie Baptist church assisted by Rev. J.R. Reid, Alden pastor. Burial was in the Alden cemetery under direction of the Pitcher Funeral Home.

Coming to this country in 1901, Mr. and Mrs. Okerson were among the early day settlers of the community south of town.

Edward Sherman Okerson was born at Clinton, Ill., April 1, 1865 and was 75 years of age at the time of his death.

He was married to Miss Abbie Slater May 12, 1889 at Elk City, Kansas and to them seven children were born, one dying in infancy.

Mr. Okerson joined the Methodist church in 1912.

Besides the widow, survivors include his children, Mrs. Lottie Steckman, Mrs. Ethel Jones and Cecil Okerson of this place; Floyd, Alvie and Raymond Okerson of California. A sister, Mrs. Sarrah Ella Briggs and a brother, Frank Okerson, both of Bartlesville and 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive.

Abbie Slater Okerson
February 22, 1869 ~ June 17, 1944


Mrs. Okerson died suddenly of a heart attack hanging out clothes while visiting at the home of her son, Alva, in Selma, Calif. She had just recently left Carnegie to visit her family in California.

Services were held at Selma, California before the body was brought to Carnegie where the funeral services were held on Sunday in the Pitcher chapel and burial was in Alden Cemetery with Rev. Leroy Simmons.

Abbie Slater married Edward S. Okerson and they came to Oklahoma and settled in the Alden community in 1900. Edward died on June 23, 1940.

Abbie wsa the 1st white child born in Wellington.

Survivors are four son, Floyd and Raymond of Modesto, Alvie of Selma and Cecil of Stockton, Calif.;two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Jones of Stockton, Calif., and Mrs. Lottie Steckman of this place; one brother, R. T. Slater of this place and one sister, Mrs. Linnie Barnes, Arkansas City, Kansas.
