Oleta Christine Putman Bird

Oleta Bird of Achille, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2023, in Calera, Oklahoma. Born on April 23, 1932, in Yuba, Oklahoma to Clay and Etta (Thornton) Putman.

Oleta spent her life dedicated to her family as a homemaker, creating a warm and loving environment for her loved ones, providing a sense of comfort to those around her. Her dedication to her family was unparalleled and her love for them was evident in every aspect of her life.

She is survived by her daughters, Christie Peppers and her husband Gary of Durant, and Lana Wingfield of Calera. Her family also included her sister Kay Elliott of Achille, six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished deeply. Oleta was preceded in death by her parents, Clay and Etta (Thornton) Putman, her husband H.F. Bird, to whom she was married for 64 years, her son Larry Bird, and her brother and sisters.

Oleta was a devoted member of the Prairie View Baptist Church of Achille. She served as their song leader and bookkeeper for many years, roles she undertook with great dedication and enthusiasm. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she lived it out in her daily interactions with those around her.

Her interests were as varied as they were joyful. Oleta took great pleasure in sewing. She enjoyed the outdoors, walking and going on camping trips. She also enjoyed attending the Silver Sneakers program and was an active participant in the community. One of her greatest joys was attending her grandchildren's sports activities, where she was their biggest cheerleader.

Oleta was a dedicated fan of the Texas Rangers baseball team. Her love for baseball was infectious, and she enjoyed watching games with her family and friends. She was also a superb cook, and her home was often filled with the delicious smells of her cooking. Her recipes will be remembered and cherished by her family for generations to come.

Oleta Bird was a woman of deep love and spirit. Her life was a testament to her values of faith, family, and community. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her loved ones and the community she served so well.

Family Hour will be Wednesday evening October 11, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home. Her funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, October 12, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Prairie View Baptist Church in Achille with Brother Jim Parrish officiating. Oleta will be laid to rest at Rosewood Cemetery following her funeral service.

Serving as pallbearers are Dee Peppers, James Bird, Brian Wingfield, Dusty Peppers, Lori Miller, and Jennifer Weatherford. Trey Gibby and Caleb Weatherford will serve as honorary pallbearers.
