Barney William Compton Jr., age 78, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 27, 2010, in Durant, surrounded by his family.

Barney retired from the United States Army after 31 years as a Sgt. Major and served in Korea and Vietnam.

He was born in Durant, Oklahoma and spent his retirement years in Durant near his many family members and friends.

Barney was of the Baptist faith and a member of the SPCA.

He was preceded in death by his father, Barney Compton Sr., his mother Jessie, along with his brothers, Don and R. C. and sisters, Ruby and Georgia B.

He is survived by his loving wife, Zelpha of Durant, and children Debbie of Ohio, Joe of Oregon, Tony of Oregon, David of Oregon, Lisa of California, Sabrina and husband Carl of Germany, Natasha and husband Stephen of Germany, Sharon Harris and husband Michael and Donna Grams and husband Ricky.

He also leaves behind his sister, Betty Blackburn of Arkansas.

Barney is also loved and missed by his many beautiful grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

"Barney, it has been an honor and a privilege to love you and be loved by you."

Services will be conducted on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church on 49th St. in Durant, Oklahoma. Officiating will be the Pastor, Dr. M. Bradley.

Graveside rites with full military honors from Ft. Sill, Oklahoma will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Calera, Oklahoma.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 9:30- 10:30 a.m. at the church, prior to the funeral.

Arrangements are under the direction of American Funeral Services, 107 N. Burney St., Colbert, Oklahoma.
