In college he was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge BPOE 287 in Denison, Texas, and such a dedicated member of the Church of Christ that he aspired to be a minister in his youth.

Smith, brother Billy Turnbull and wife Susan Turnbull, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Donald “Blackie” and Lucy Turnbull and brother Richard Turnbull.
