Edwin C. Portman, 96, of Muskogee, died Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at Muskogee Regional Medical Center.

He was born on a farm two miles north of Weston, Texas, on January 11, 1912.

He graduated from Calera High School, received a bachelor's degree from Southeastern College in Durant and earned two masters degrees from Oklahoma A&M. After college, Ed was a teacher and basketball coach.

During WWII, he was a Lt. Commander in the Navy, serving as an instructor in naval aviation. After the war, he worked for the Veterans Administration as a real estate appraiser.

Ed married Floriene Portman in Antlers on February 24, 1940.

He was active in the First United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. One of his greatest loves was golf, which he played well into his 90s.

He was preceded in death by his parents, ten brothers and sisters, his son Michael and his wife of 64 years, Floriene.

Survivors include two sons, David Portman and wife Candy of Tulsa and Philip Portman and wife Sheila of Birmingham, Alabama; three granddaughters, Michelle Portman, Stephanie Portman and Stacey Portman, and one great-granddaughter, Katherine Walter.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Rusty Williams officiating. Interment will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Cemetery in Durant.

Mr. Portman was a giving man, and in that fashion donations may be made in his memory to the First United Methodist Church Pastor's Benevolence Fund, 600 East Okmulgee, Muskogee, Oklahoma 74401.

Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home.
