Joyce Roberts McGinnis

Joyce McGinnis, a cherished wife, mother and grandmother, passed from this earth at her home in Durant, Oklahoma on Wednesday April 25, 2018 at the age of 85. She was born in Durant, Oklahoma on December 14, 1932 to Clifford Marvin and Annie Bell (Humphrey) Roberts.

Joyce attended Caddo and Atoka Elementary schools. In 1951 she graduated from Cobb High School where she met her husband Jimmie Lee McGinnis. Following graduation she moved to Dallas and worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator, later transferring to the Durant District Office. Joyce married her beloved Jim on March 7, 1953 and began her professional career as a wife, mother and grandmother. She and Jim, raised and loved five children. Together they worked the family farm, taking care of their animals, and raising a large beautiful garden of fresh vegetables and flowers. She was a woman that was solid as a rock, considered by many to possess “true grit”. Joyce loved to cook and bake for those she loved, and no meal was served without a delicious dessert to be enjoyed by all present. She taught her family to lead a frugal life, always saying, “waste not, want not”. All the traditional holidays and special gatherings with her family were filled with an abundance of love and joy. She always looked forward to the times spent together as a whole family.

Mrs. McGinnis is survived by her husband of 65 years, Jim, of the home; beloved children, Rickie McGinnis and wife Shawnda of Durant, OK, Teresia McGinnis Johnson and husband Brad of Arlington, TX, Randy McGinnis and wife Teri Lynn of Durant, OK , Terry McGinnis and Dixie of Gainesville, TX and Tammie McGinnis and Zane of Durant, OK, sisters, Margaret Welch of Garland, TX, and Sheryl Choate and husband Alvin of Beaumont, TX; and her six cherished grandchildren.

Mrs. McGinnis was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Annie Roberts; brother, Jack Roberts; and sister Norma Jernigan.

Family hour will be from 6-7:00 PM on Friday April 27th at the Holmes~Coffey~Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Oklahoma. A funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM Saturday April 28th at the funeral home chapel with Tommy Rowland officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Durant. Pallbearers will be Herschel Williams, Dudley Rowland, Scott Martin, Larry Harris, Kurt Stumpff, and Craig Whisenhunt.
