Ernest Jackson Slack of Caddo, Oklahoma passed away Saturday, February 19, 2011 in Durant, Oklahoma at the age of 87 years, 2 months, 16 days. He was born Monday, December 3, 1923 in Caddo, Oklahoma to Virgil Whitley and Eleanor (Carroll) Slack.

Ernest was born and raised in Caddo, Oklahoma. The home still stands where he was born. He thought Caddo was (It) the best place in the world. In high school he loved and played football. His team was the only non-defeated team in the history of Caddo football. As a young man, he was shipped off to World War II to the Navy, January 1943-May 1946. Later on in life, he loved to tell stories about his war years. When he returned from war, he married Christine Robinson of Caddo. After they were married for 11 years, they proudly gave birth to a daughter, Norma Gay in April 1964. He was a member of the Caddo City Council for years. During his career Ernest spent many years working at S&H Electric in Durant. He ended his career working at S.E.O.S.U. in January 1992. As hobbies, Ernest loved to fish, and hunt. He had stories to tell about it that would make you laugh. Ernest could build wood items of all kinds including martin bird houses. He was a gardener and also there were many fond memorable times he had with is dogs and grand dogs. He always had dogs and was an animal lover. Ernest and Chris loved to entertain and dance with friends, play cards, marbles, and liked to camp at the lake with family and friends. In later years Ernest had lots of joy riding around in his gocart with his granddaughter and her friends. Ernest spent the last days even to the end loving and caring for his wife of 58 years. He always loved a challenge. He was affectionate and if you were loved by him you were loved with a special love, a love from all his being. He had room in his heart for everyone and showed it.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 AM, Friday, February 25, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Caddo, Oklahoma. Rev. Dewey Schaffer will be officiating. Interment will follow at the Gethsemane Cemetery Caddo, Oklahoma. Serving as pallbearers will be James Flowers, John Carroll, Jacob Foster, Richard Tonubee, Wayne Gerlach, and Teddy Clements. Honorary pallbearers will be Timon Watkins, Dan Heil, A.L. Huggins, Jon Voisen, Scott Voisen, Stephen Michael Park, and Joe Park.

Family hour will be from 6-7 PM Thursday, February 24, 2011 at the Holmes~Coffey~Murray Funeral Home Durant, Oklahoma.

He is survived by his wife Christine Slack of Caddo, Oklahoma; daughter, Norma (Slack) Ramirez and husband Paul of Caddo, Oklahoma; cousin who he raised as a son, Jimmy Carroll and wife Mary of Coleman, Oklahoma; sister- in- law, Charleen Voisen of Irving, Texas, Ruth Jan Park of Witchita, Kansas, Mary Slack of Madill, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Jacob Foster and wife Amber of Durant, Oklahoma, Kristin Foster of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Brian Fain of Bridgeport, Texas, Juana Fain of Caddo, Oklahoma; great grandchildren, Jaden and Kiana Foster of Tulsa, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews, Donna Park, Scott Voisen, Steve Park, Joe Park, Jon Voisen, Kay Salton, and Karen (Slack) Bennett; numerous other friend and family.

He is preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Eleanor Slack; brother, Harold Whitley Slack; grandmother, Laura Luella Cassidy; nephew, Cliff Voisen; aunt, Ernestine Watson; uncle, Stanton Carroll.
