R. Deane Wymer, age 84, was born March 7, 1934 in Canton, Oklahoma to Earl Ellsworth and Grace Evelyn (Dowd) Wymer. Deane lived a full life and on Saturday, July 7, 2018, he went home to be with loved ones in Heaven.
Deane married Esther Odishaw on October 28, 1961 and together they raised two children: Derek and Suanne. Deane grew up in the Longdale community and graduated from Longdale High School. He was a graduate of Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Business Administration and double majors in Economics and Business Administration. After university, he served a brief stint in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
After graduating from NWOSU, Deane became a business college accounting instructor in Albuquerque, NM. A few years later he moved to Los Angeles to work for a publishing company, and there he met and married Esther. In 1964, he and Esther with baby Derek in tow moved to Kansas City where Deane co-owned a business college in Kansas City.
In September 1967, Deane, Esther, Derek and Suanne moved to Fairview, OK so Deane could help his father and mother run their farm and build the house they’d long dreamed of having. For several years, he worked on the farm and built his parent’s house in the morning and in the afternoon and evening he worked for C.C. Davis preparing personal tax returns. In 1969 when Davis retired, Deane established Wymer & Associates in Fairview.
Wymer & Associates was a successful business due to Deane’s hard work and stewardship. Deane cared for his clients beyond their tax and financial needs, developing deep relationships that with many families spanned generations. When he began to consider retirement, Deane’s utmost concern was for his clients and continuing the legacy of a business that valued its staff, clients, and community. After several years of searching for a partner to continue the business, in 1999 Deane brought Kyle Brownlee of Enid, OK into the fold and after several years, Wymer Brownlee Tax and Financial Management was formed. Deane and Kyle reinvigorated the business and today, Wymer Brownlee Wealth Strategies continues to offer exceptional services with offices in Fairview, Enid, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Bartlesville.
Deane tirelessly advocated for the betterment of the accounting profession. He was a member of the Oklahoma Society of Accountants since 1985, serving on several committees as well as on the OSA Board of Governors for 14 years. OSA named Deane the 2010 Accountant of the Year. Through this organization, Deane proposed and promoted three bills at the Oklahoma Legislature which are now law. Since 1987 Deane was a member of the National Society of Accountants, serving on several committees as well as a District VIII Governor.
Deane was a proud member of the Fairview community and supported it in many ways. He served eight years on the Fairview City Council and two years as mayor. He was on the Board of Directors of the Fairview Savings & Loan Association for many years, as well as serving with the Major County Economic Development Corporation, and the Fairview Chamber of Commerce Board, and the board of MAGB Transportation, Inc. Through Fairview Savings & Loan, Deane was integral to the redevelopment of the Royal Theatre and the development of the Royal Theatre Foundation.
Deane was an active member of the Fairview Lions Club and served on the boards of the Oklahoma Lions Club Foundation and of Meadows of Hope. He served as a District 3-A Governor, 2nd Vice Governor, and a District 3-A Zone Chair.
The Fairview First United Methodist Church was Deane’s church home. He was a Trustee of the Oklahoma Methodist Conference, having served as Chair of the Audit Committee.
Deane was a member of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, serving on the Finance and Audit Committee and the Oklahoma Lottery Board, appointed by Governor Mary Fallin.
He was a board member of Northwestern Oklahoma State University Foundation. In 2015, construction began on the R. Deane and Esther M. Wymer Nursing Lab on the NWOSU campus in Alva.
He quietly gave financial assistance to those in need and whenever asked, willingly shared his knowledge, financial expertise, and wisdom. Deane was most especially interested in young people – in hearing their dreams, encouraging them to work hard to achieve those dreams, and giving them support.
Deane never knew a stranger. He enjoyed meeting people and learning about their lives and work; he delighted in connecting people with similar needs that served to benefit both parties.
Deane was a big supporter of the University of Oklahoma who loved attending football games with Esther, Larry & Sue Jensen, and Jim & Mary Wilkinson, especially championship games. Boomer Sooner!
He enjoyed writing poetry and researching his family’s Irish heritage. Deane and Esther travelled extensively for business and pleasure with trips to England, Ireland, Italy, South Korea, the Panama Canal, the Caribbean, and across the United States and Canada.
At the end of his life, Deane continued in his support of others as a tissue donor through LifeShare of Oklahoma.
Deane is survived by his beloved wife Esther, son Derek, and daughter Suanne. He is also survived by brother and sister-in-law Larry and Betty Wymer of Edmond; sister-in-law Peggy Wymer of Longdale; brothers-in-law Edward Odishaw & wife Theresa, Richard Odishaw, Jim Odishaw & wife Janet, and sisters-in-law Margaret Odishaw and Jeanne Docherty & husband Billy, and their families in Canada. Family was very important to Deane, he rejoiced in in all of his nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was also proud of his business families in Fairview, Enid, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Bartlesville, and many friends and associates across the state. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sally Oakley and her husband Keith, and his brother Duane Wymer.
A special thank you to the staff of the Fairview Regional Medical Center for their care and to niece Keith Ann Schaffner and her husband Pip for their assistance, love, and support since moving to the Fairview area.
Viewing will be held from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., Tuesday and 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., Wednesday, with the family present from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday evening, July 11, 2018 at Pierce Funeral Home, 721 S. Main, Fairview. A celebration of Deane’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, July 12, 2018 at the Fairview First United Methodist Church, 811 E. Elm St., Fairview, OK. Prior to the celebration, Deane will be laid to rest in a family service at the Mountain View Cemetery.
