Hazel Sophia (Beatey) Hooten

Hazel Sophia (Beatey) Hooten
March 28, 1928 ~ August 30, 2022

Hazel Sophia Hooten, 94, was accepted into Heaven on August 30, 2022. She was born Hazel Sophia Beatey on March 28, 1928 to Lillie Rose (Gundlach) and Charles “Gus” Arthur Beatey of Canton, Oklahoma.

She married Harlan Junior “Jack” Benson at the Presbyterian Church in Watonga, Oklahoma on September 21, 1948. From that union three children were born, Kenneth and Keith Benson and Shelia (Benson) Latham. Following the passing of her husband, she remarried Boyd Edgar Hooten on December 29, 1973, to which they both inherited a wealth of blended family and loved ones.

Hazel always looked forward to the future, always seeing the positive side of every person with an encouraging word of advice. She was a loving friend, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to all that crossed her path. Hazel was baptized on April 24, 1983 by her pastor Mike McReynolds and she was an active and faithful member of the Canton Christian Church up until her time of passing.

Hazel worked as a hairdresser in Canton for many years, up until her time of retirement. Upon retirement Hazel donated her spare time to the Dahlia Garden Club, RSVP, Canton Senior Citizens, the Walleye Rodeo, the election board and the Canton Library. She loved to sew and quilted several quilt top blankets of which she donated 15 quilt topped blankets to the Canton Senior Citizens during her lifetime. She loved to read and she frequently spent time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren by reading the bible to them. She enjoyed traveling, camping, playing dominoes, and playing cards with her friends and family.

She is survived by her three children; many friends and family members. A celebration of her life will be held in her honor on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at 1:00 p.m., at the Canton Christian Church with Chaplain Danny Cavett officiating. Interment will follow at Cherryvale Cemetery under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home, Canton, Oklahoma. Those wishing to honor her may make a donation to the Canton Senior Citizens or the Canton Christian Church Youth group with the funeral home serving as custodian at P.O. Box 36, Canton, OK 73724.
