Joseph Jess Birdshead

Aug. 22, 1905 ~ Nov. 3, 1987

CANTON - Services for Joseph Jess Birdshead, 82, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Mennonite Church, south of Canton, with Rev. James Scott officiating. Burial will be in Government Reinternment Cemetery at Canton Lake, with Haigler Funeral Home, Canton, in charge of arrangements.

Birdshead died Tuesday in a Watonga hospital. He was born in Oklahoma Territory Aug. 22, 1905, and grew up in the Redrock community. In November 1933, he married Rose Tall Bear at Fairview. The couple farmed in the Colony, Geary, Canton and Carlton communities. He also worked at the U.S. Gypsum Plant in Southard for 10 years, before retiring.

Survivors include his wife, Rose; eight sons, Earl Birdshead Labeau of Ethete, Wyo., Marvin Whiteshirt of Geary, Clifford of Anadarko, Joseph of Pawnee, Lawrence of Missoula, Mont, and Laverne, Sterling and Charles, all of Watonga; three daughters, Tommie Rose Cravatt of Oklahoma City and Frances Bates and Myrlie Lime, both of Watonga; a half sister, Jane Warren of St. Stephens, Wyo.; 43 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, a sister and a brother.
