Cora Mae Scabbyhorse Querdibitty was born September 5, 1932 to Arapaho Chief Harry Arthur Sutton and Sallie Blackbear Sutton at Geary, Oklahoma, but lived most of her life in Canton, Oklahoma. She died September 16, 2010 at Okeene Hospital after a short illness.
Cora is survived by four children, Alana Blackwolf, Roni Brooks, Ray Scabbyhorse and Kellie Williams; seven grandchildren, and two of which she raised and considered her own, Jamie Yellowfish and Kiley Scabbyhorse; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arapaho chiefs Billy Sutton and Allen Sutton; eight sisters, Viola Sutton Hatch, Nancy Sutton, Lavonta Sutton Kenrick, Charlene Sutton Lime, Wilda Sutton Gould, Georgia Sutton Roberts, Ava Sutton Benson and Marcella Sutton Armijo; and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren;
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands James Scabbyhorse and Jed Querdibitty; son Ronald Gene Scabbyhorse; daughter Debra Lynn Scabbyhorse; brother Arthur Warren Sutton; sister Patricia Sutton Walker; one great-granddaughter Kamryn Maldonado;
Cora enjoyed playing handgame and was a member of the Canton Indians handgame team. The Canton Indians were the State Handgame Champions in the years 1989, 2003 and 2006. She also traveled to the Arapaho Sundance ceremony held every year at Ethete, Wyoming.
A wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, September 19, 2010 at the Canton Native American Community Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 20, 2010 at the Canton School Multi-purpose Building with Pastor Gerald Panana and Pastor George Akeen officiating.
Interment will follow in Canton Indian Mennonite Cemetery under the direction of Haigler-Pierce Funeral Home of Canton. Condolences may be made online at www.haiglerpierce.com.
