Nelson Leander Reed

Submitted by: Wanda Purcell

Nelson Leander Reed was born in Lynn County, Missouri, July 27, 1865.

He grew to manhood in Missouri and on July 7, 1895 was happily united in marriage to Miss Nettie Jackson. To this union were born three daughters, Vera Marie, Jessie May, and Mildred Etna, one of whom, Jessie May, at the age of twelve preceded her father to the heavenly home.

Mrs. James Sprowls resides in Cheyenne and Mildred, a girl of about eleven, resides with her mother here.

Brother Reed, with his family, moved to Oklahoma in 1901 and settled in the Sandstone country between Elk City and Cheyenne.

In 1921 he moved his family to Cheyenne where he lived till the day of his death, March 10, 1925.

He professed faith in Christ about 1905 and united with the Christian Church. In 1924 during the revival in the Baptist Church of Cheyenne, he and his faithful companion who survives him united with that church.

In all the walks of life where Brother Reed went while here in the flesh he was faithful to the trust committed to his hands. Whether on the farm or in the business world he was always the soul of honor.

As a husband and father he provided for those whom the Lord had given him and ever exhibited those qualities of loving kindness and tender ministrations so characteristic of men who are good and true, and faithful in their day and generation.

So living as only good men can, he died as only good men die.

He leaves to mourn his loss the faithful companion of many years; two daughters; and a circle of friends that was inclusive of all his acquaintances.

To the sorrowing ones we offer our heartfelt sympathies and pray that God will be with them in this dark time.

Mr. Reed had resided in Cheyenne for the past several years and while in our city made a host of friends, all of whom spoke well of him.

He became ill just one week before his demise, but his condition was serious from the first. He took flu and later developed pneumonia which went to both lungs causing his death. He had been in poor health for several months but was thought to be improving in every way when the last illness overtook him.

Funeral services were conducted in the Baptist church of this city Wednesday morning, with Rev. E. E. Grimes officiating, after which the remains were taken to Grand View cemetery and laid to rest beside others of the family.

The large number of friends from his old home who attended the funeral is expected that competition and burial offering bespoke the esteem in which Mr. Reed was held by those who knew him.

We join the many friends in extending sympathy to the sorrowing ones in this their sad hour.
