(permission granted)

Bernice Madeline Croskey Wilcox was born January 4, 1930 in Shattuck, Oklahoma and raised in Fairview, Oklahoma. Father, Charles Henry Croskey and Mother Isabell Jackson Croskey had two children, Bernice and Wayne. Isabell passed away shortly after the birth of Wayne. Charles was remarried to Nettie Beatrice Hood, with whom he shared 17 children. Bernice married Willis Lee (Bill) Wilcox in Rolla, Kansas on October 3, 1946. The couple was married 5 years when Bill joined the United States Marine Corp in December of 1951. During his service, Bernice kept herself busy with a variety of jobs, including cashier, record store clerk, and more.

While stationed in California, Bill and Bernice mourned the loss of their first daughter, Ramona, who passed away on the day of her birth in 1960. The couple was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1966 when they celebrated the birth of their daughter, Rhonda Jean. The family made many homes across the country throughout Bill’s 20-year service in the military, but made Elk City their permanent home in 1979. Bernice and Bill attended the Assembly of God Church in Elk City for decades. Bill passed away on April 10, 2012 at the age of 83. The couple was married for 65 years. Since Bill’s passing, Bernice spent much of her time cutting it up with her friends at Meals on Wheels, playing Chicken Foot and Dominoes over lunch. Bernice was known for her humor and spunk. She loved to host get-togethers with friends and family, alike. Bernice was known for her hospitality and, above all, love for everyone.

Bernice passed away on October 19th, 2019 at the age of 89.

She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Jean, and husband, Hank Twyman of Elk City, Oklahoma. She also leaves behind granddaughter, Hayley Layne, and husband, Delton Brack, of Edmond, Oklahoma, and granddaughter Riley Brooke and husband, Michal Hust, of Elk City, Oklahoma, parents of Bernice’s beloved great-granddaughter, Layken Sage Hust.

Bernice was known as a woman of strong faith. In a diary entry Bernice wrote as she was reflecting on her long, fulfilling life, she noted, “If you have met Bernice and forgot her, you have lost nothing. But if you have met Jesus and forgot Him, you have lost everything.” Bernice held her Lord and Savior close to her heart. But she can be sure that everyone who held Bernice close to their hearts will never forget her.
