Donald "Don" Wham, Jr.

Don Wham was born March 8, 1934 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Rodillia
Mauldin and Donald Wham, Sr. He passed away August 31, 2015 at Elk City,
Oklahoma at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 23 days.
 
Don grew up in Oklahoma City and as a young child was an extra in the
original movie "Little Rascals." He attended school at Capitol Hill High
School graduating in 1952. He later attended Oklahoma City University
and played in several bands, orchestras and dance bands playing various
wind instruments. He met Juanita Botchlet on a blind date and their
romance blossomed and they were married at Cordell, Oklahoma on June 11,
1955. They lived in Oklahoma City before moving to Cordell in 1956. They
remained there until 1960 when they moved to Tulsa and later returned to
Cordell in 1963 where he and his father-in-law owned a smoked turkey
plant. Don and Juanita moved to Elk City in 1969 to make their home.
 
Don was a life long learner, avid reader and had many interests,
everything from hunting and fishing to technology to even space
exploration. He was one of the first computer owners in Cordell and
taught computer classes at Elk City United Methodist Church and
conducted field testing for the Microsoft Cooperation. Don held many
jobs and occupations including a lithographer for a printing company and
selling insurance for Prudential. He also worked with his father-in-law
as a feed truck driver, operated a poultry hatchery, ran a feed store,
raised turkeys, caged hens and cattle. Don was a co-owner and manager of
Jiggs Smoked Turkeys and eventually built Jiggs Smokehouse on I-40 west
of Clinton. He was also a bail bondsman and served as his own bounty
hunter.
 
Throughout his life Don was very active in his church work and held
civic duties high on his priority list. He became a Christian and was
baptized as a young adult and was a member of the 4th & College Church
of Christ in Cordell where he sponsored many youth groups. Don and
Juanita later became members of the Elk City United Methodist Church and
he served on many church boards, local and foreign missions including
overseas to Slovakia. He was a member of the choir and traveled with
them on a European concert tour. Don was raised to the Degree of Master
Mason, exalted to the Degree of Royal Arch, greeted as a Select Master
Mason and Knighted as a Knight Templar. He also received his 32nd degree
Scottish Rite Mason. He was also a member of the Elk City and Cordell
Kiwanis Club, past member of the Elks Lodge, charter member and manager
of Moose Lodge, served on the board of directors and president for the
Oklahoma and Texas Meat Processors Association, Beckham County
Democratic party, Oklahoma Bail Bondsman association board of directors
and was a city commissioner from 1991 - 2009.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Tony Dodd,
father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jiggs and Earlene Botchlet, and a
son-in-law, Bill Wilson.
 
He is survived by his wife, Juanita, of the home; 2 daughters, Carol
Wilson, Elk City, OK, Teresa Hintner and husband, Bill, Chickasha, OK; 5
grandchildren, Heather Sutton and husband, Brandon, Amarillo, TX, Jon
Wilson and wife, Jennifer, Cordell, OK, Ben Wilson and wife, Wendie, Elk
City, OK, Julie Phillips and husband, George, Yukon, OK, Alicia Baughman
and husband, Jason, Lawton, OK; 13 great grandchildren, 3 great great
grandchildren, a sister, Betty Wham, Edmond, OK; and a host of other
relatives and friends.
