Joseph C "Joe" Thompson
Cheyenne News
30-Jun-1918
Submitted by: Wanda Purcell

Many will be sad to learn of the death of Joe Thompson which occurred at Elk City June 10, 1918. His remains were laid to rest June 12th at Elk City. He was 39 years old and a member of the Baptist church.

Most of us first remember Joe as a fine, spirited young man living on a clain in our community at Roll. We always found him to be industrious, honest and upright in every particular with none of the waywardness of most young men.

September 5, 1908 he was married to Lottie Hanawalt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hanawalt.

Born to this union is one daughter who is now seven years old.

Shortly after their marriage Joe went to work for Mr. W.M. Rice a contractor of Amarillo, Texas and worked for him continuously until four years ago when he was seriously injured and permanently disabled by a falling elevator on a building he was working on at Corsacana, Texas. The accident seemed to have been caused by the carelessness of some of the other workmen thru no fault of Mr. Rice who has been a true friend to him. He was presented to a whell chair by his co workers and was able to sit in it most of the time. They lived at Roll thru the summer of 1916 moving from here to Elk City. Joe's parents lived on a claim near Berlin in the early days but later moved to Florida. His last illness lasted about four weeks.

Besides a wife and little daughter he leaves a mother, one brother, three sisters, besides other relatives and a host of friends to mourn his loss.
