From the book, The Fighting Men of Oklahoma: SSGT Billy C. Tate, son of Mr. &
Mrs. C.J. Tate, was born Aug. 18, 1914 at Cherokee OK and graduated from
Cherokee High School. He was inducted into the service on Sept. 16, 1940 and
received his training in Artillery at Ft. Sill OK, Camp Barkeley TX and Camp
Gruber OK. SGT Tate served 21 months overseas in the European Theater of War in
France and England, participating in the campaign of Normany. He was with the
3rd Army, 202 FA Btry, Co. B and received his discharge October 22, 1945. He was
awarded 4 Battle Stars and the Purple Heart.
