Juanita Mary "Nita" (Metcalf) Blackwell

Juanita Mary (Metcalf) Blackwell was born April 14, 1933 at Frederick, Oklahoma. Her parents are William Metcalf and Mary (Geiger) Metcalf.

Nita Mary, as she was known at the time, grew up on her family farm southwest of Indiahoma, Oklahoma. Nita was the youngest of four sisters, and the only one born in a hospital.

In 1939 when Nita was 6 years old her mother died of cancer. Her father and his brother, Tom, Nita's uncle, did all the farm work and when Tom died in 1943 her father sold the farm and moved to Lawton, OK. Nita was a cheerleader, member of the band, and other activities in high school. After graduating from Lawton High School, Nita attended Cameron College. She received an Associates Degree in Home Economics.

In 1953 while attending college at Central State in Edmond, OK Nita met Clay Blackwell who was also a student there. On July 31, 1954 Nita and Clay were married at the First Christian Church in Elk City, OK. Nita and Clay have three children, Wade William Blackwell, born August 24, 1957, Bryan Clay Blackwell, born April 22, 1959 and Sue (Blackwell) Lalk born October 9, 1962.

In 1955 Clay joined the United States Marine Corps and Nita became a Marine wife, moving frequently and living in various parts of the United States. Nita was a single mother when Clay was deployed and responsible for raising three children on her own.

On July 1, 1976 Clay retired from the Marine Corps and the family returned to Elk City, OK. Nita first helped with the real estate and insurance business and when that was sold she became very active in volunteer work in the church and community. Nita was a member of the United Methodist Church, member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and a part of the United Fund. Nita especially found working with Meals on Wheels rewarding and served as community coordinator for in home deliveries for over 20 years.
 

Nita is preceded in death by her parents.
 

She is survived by her husband, Clay, of the home; 2 sons, Wade Blackwell and wife, Allison, Weatherford, OK and Bryan Blackwell and wife, Sherri, Keller, TX; 1 daughter, Sue Lalk and husband, Wayne, Hillsboro, MO; 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

 
Arrangements are under the direction of Whinery Funeral Service.


The family suggest memorial donations be made in Nita's name to the Elk City Meals on Wheels at 1510 West 9th Street, Elk City, OK 73644.
