Leon Riley Gillum, Sr. was born on July 29, 1917 in Erick, Oklahoma, to James Warren Gillum, Sr. and Edna Riley Gillum. He passed away on July 16, 2016 in Clinton, Oklahoma, at the age of 98 years, 11 months and 17 days.

Leon was born in a room above the Bonebrake-Gillum Hardware Store on Main Street in Erick. He graduated from high school in Erick at the age of 16 and went on to attend the University of Oklahoma in Norman. While on campus, Leon was a proud member of the OU ‘Rufneks’ squad, as well as a member of the ‘Pride of Oklahoma’ band. He graduated from OU in 1938 with a degree in Business Administration. Since Leon graduated from OU four other family members have graduated and one is currently attending. After graduation, he started working for Texaco, and when he was 25, the company chose to transfer him to Louisiana. It was there that he met and was married to Ruth Marie Callahan in Houma, Louisiana on March 21, 1942. They made their home in Houma and celebrated the birth of their first two children. Upon the death of his father, Leon and Ruth then made their way back to Erick to run his father’s Texaco station there. He continued delivering Texaco products to surrounding rural communities for over 35 years. Many still remember the gum that Leon always brought with him to give to the children. In Erick they continued extending their family by having four more children.

Leon was preceded in death by his and Ruth’s parents, a brother, James Warren Gillum, Jr., a son, Jerry Eugene Gillum; great-great grandson, Berit Calvin Warren McAbee and a sister, Edna Gwendolyne Driskell.

Leon is survived by his wife, Ruth, of the home; his children, Leon Riley Gillum, Jr. and wife, Norma, of Luther, OK; Gwendolyne Carol Gillum of Yukon, OK; James Warren Gillum of Erick, OK; Jack Edward Gillum and wife, Connie, of Amarillo, TX; David Leon Gillum and wife, Beverly, of Erick, OK; a daughter-in-law, Wendy Joy Gillum of Edmond, OK; 12 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family requests donations be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
