ENID, OK — Athalie Whinery was born October 18, 1931, in Gotebo, OK., to Leone Catherine and James P. Rollins. She passed away Aug. 6, 2013, at Oklahoma City, OK. at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Athalie grew up in Gotebo and graduated from high school in 1949. After graduation she furthered her education at OBU while working for the First National Bank in Shawnee, OK.

She was married to Kenneth Whinery at Gotebo, OK,. on Aug. 2, 1952.

After their marriage, they lived in Oklahoma City where they started their family. Kenneth was drafted into the U.S. Navy and they moved to Sunnyvale, California, in July of 1956. After his discharge in 1958 they moved to Yosemite National Park.

In 1960, Athalie and Kenneth moved to Sayre, where Kenneth started his medical practice. Athalie continued to be a homemaker and also worked with her husband as the office manager in their medical practice in Sayre. Athalie was active in many civic organizations including PEO since 1981, the As You Like It Club where she served as president, and also volunteered at the Shortgrass Museum. She enjoyed watching University of Oklahoma football, traveling to Alaska and Colorado on family vacations, fishing, cooking, and also sewing for her family. Athalie was also a member of the Sayre First Baptist Church, where she served on the Building Committee.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Kenneth E. Whinery, of the home; three children, Kent Whinery and wife, Sandy, Sayre, OK; Bret Whinery and wife, Barbara, Enid, OK; and Tess Chambers and husband, Mark, Arcadia, OK; six grandchildren, Landon Whinery and fiancé, Erica, Fort Worth, Texas; Morgan Whinery and husband, Ben Habern, Norman, OK, Kevin Frantz and wife, AiLien, Oklahoma City, OK, Kendra Whinery, Perry, OK, Jacob Whinery, Enid, OK, Kylie Chambers, Arcadia, OK; three great-grandchildren, Tiana and Jason Frantz and Emery Halford; and finally her cat, Thai, together with a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Sayre First Baptist Church and officiated by Tom Cooksey. Burial will be at Sayre-Doxey Cemetery under direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service. Condolences can be made at www.whineryfs.com.
