Longtime icon and resident of Sayre, OK, Mrs. Vera Mae Sanders left this world and entered Heaven’s Gates, February 15, 2019 in Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 5 days.

Vera was born September 10, 1937 to her parents Q.L. and Thelma Lee (Cupell) Chapman in Lela, Texas. Vera will be remembered as a devoted Christian woman who helped raise many children in Sayre. She will be dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate the fact that she is at peace and pain free with her creator. “Mom Mae” as she was affectionately known was the owner of Vera’s Playhouse with over 500 children entering her home over 50 years. In her written words: “I’ve had a GOOD LIFE. All my love goes out to my LOVING FAMILY. Thanks for EVERYTHING. I have so many good memories. My family was my life. Love goes out to all my many kids that came thru my door and heart”. Vera was an active member of the First Baptist Church with many years teaching Sunday School. She received a 30 year as well as a 50 year award for teaching. In 2012 she received the Citizen of The Year Award and in the late 1990’s the All Sports Fan of The Year Award.
