J. T. Vandiver fell from a scaffold Tuesday and was killed.

J. T. Vandiver, of Cherokee who has been here working with Samuel Wickey at the carpenter trade, was accidentally killed Tuesday about 3 PM by falling from a scaffold 18 feet high while at work on a big barn for W. C. Hecker, 3 miles east of town. He fell on his head and struck the ground with great force and in a way that his neck was broken. He lived nearly 2 hours, but never gained consciousness during that time. He was at work sawing out a window in the gable and was using a single 2 x 10 for a scaffold, and it is thought that he became overbalanced and in trying to catch himself, fell headfirst to the ground. The remains were taken in charge by undertaker, Charles Smith, who brought the body to town and prepared for burial.

His wife and children did not arrive from Cherokee until about 6 PM and it was a terrible shock to them, when told her husband and father was dead.

The funeral services were held at the Christian Church Wednesday at 1:30 PM conducted by Rev. Young, and the remains were laid to rest in the Byron Cemetery.

The deceased leaves a wife and two children and a brother, L. C. Vandiver, of this place, to whom the people of this community join in extending their heartfelt sympathy.
