Aline Star Cemetery

ENID — Carl Freddie Mittelstet, 90, of Aline, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at Greenbrier Nursing Home, Enid.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at First Christian Church, Aline, with Polly Young officiating. Burial will follow in Aline Star Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Helena.

Memories may be shared with the family at http://www.lanmanmemorials.com/.

Freddie, the ninth of 15 children, was born April 30, 1921, two miles north of Fairview to Carl and Amelia Sonnenberg Mittelstet.

In 1927 the family moved to a farm near Aline. He attended Ruby country school for eight years and graduated from Aline High School in 1939.

Freddie worked at Somers Produce Station and had a rural ice route before volunteering for the Army Air Corps in 1942.

Freddie and Mary Vignon Goodno were married at Central Christian Church of Enid on Dec. 2, 1942.

He served in the WWII European Theater as Communications Section Chief in the 572nd Squadron of the 391st Bomb Group, 9th Air Force. He participated in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.

Freddie was a life time farmer and trained his grandsons to be his wheat "harvest hands." He operated the Aline Champlin Station for eight years and served as Aline Postmaster for 20 years.

He was dedicated to his family, church and community. He was a member of Aline Chamber of Commerce, a 32nd Degree Mason and a charter member of the Kiner Ryel American Legion Post 152. Freddie was a loyal community servant and was the church board secretary for 35 years.

Freddie and Mary V. enjoyed traveling and were "Winter Texans." For 12 years they took their four grandchildren on summer grandparent trips.

After retirement, Freddie and Mary V. lived in Fairview a short time and then moved to Enid, where they have lived for the past four years.

At the nursing home during the past year, Freddie was fondly called the "official" greeter. Special thanks go to the Greenbrier staff as well as all the friends and relatives who visited, sent cards and prayed for Freddie during his battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herman, Richard, Edward "Edd," Reinhold "Runt" and Johnie; sisters, Olga, Elfreda "Fritz," Wilma, Clara, Martha and Gracie.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Vignon; daughter, Linda and husband Emmett Carter of Edmond; son, Kirk and wife Madelyn Mittelstet of Stillwater; grandchildren, Jarrett and Kresson Carter of Edmond, Andrea and Sonel Aggarwal of Edmond, Staci and David Diaz of Bethany, Matthew and Jennifer Mittelstet of Frisco, Texas; great-grandchildren, Kade, Kenley, Luke, Eli and two baby boys due in November; sisters, Emily Record and Doris Holle of Enid, Marjorie Green of Washington State; and sister-in-law, Esther Mittelstet of Enid.

Memorial donations may be made to Aline First Christian Church through the funeral home.
