Aline Star Cemetery

Flames take life of Mrs. Joel Miller, wife of prominent Aline farmer, Tuesday – dress catches fire.

Attracted by screams coming from the house, Joel Miller ran to the kitchen and found his wife enveloped in flames, running about the room and frantically fighting the fire that was sapping her life away. Grabbing a blanket he wrapped it around the woman, the fire was smothered, but not until too late, the flames had, in only a few seconds time, burned the clothing from her and death came in nine hours from the accident. Mrs. Miller was starting the fire for the noon–day meal last Tuesday. She had poured a little kerosene on the smoldering fire in the kitchen stove, probably dropping a few drops on her clothing. In a second's time her clothing was on fire and before her husband could reach her she was exhausted almost beyond resuscitation.

The doctor was called immediately but all efforts to save the unfortunate woman were in vain. She gradually gave way to the opiates being administered to make the end as easy as possible. It is likely that the fire was fanned by a breeze passing through the rooms, the day being mild and pleasant.

The funeral services were held at the home east of town Thursday and the remains were laid to rest in the Aline Cemetery.
