Glenn Barry Robbins, the son of Lee Robbins and Mahala Lewis Robbins was born June 10, 1918, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and departed this life on March 23, 2011.
Glenn was the last surviving child of a family of an even dozen children.
Glenn attended Union Grade, graduated from Stilwell High School, Bacone Jr. College and served in World War II as a member of the Air Force.
While in the Air Force, Glenn married Roxie Barker; their marriage endured 65 years until Roxie’s death in 2008. Glenn and Roxie made their home in Stilwell where Glenn used his college training as an electrician to make a living along with raising cattle and chickens. Glenn’s first batch of chickens sold in time to pay the doctor and hospital bill for Linda’s delivery in December of 1948.
He was an avid quail and deer hunter. He took great pride in being with his sons and grandsons as they learned to hunt and develop an appreciation for the outdoors and sportsmanship. He had a bird dog named, Mac, that apparently was one of the best in the area for many years. He still loved to tell stories about his dog, Mac, and how many offers he had to sell the dog. The dog just wasn’t for sale at any price. Good thing no one ever asked Mom what she’d take for the dog. One of Dad’s passions in life was watching sports, especially OU and The Dallas Cowboys. He loved watching all sports on TV, it didn’t really matter whether it was football, baseball, basketball, or rodeo. He loved it all; golf not so much. But, he would watch golf before he would turn off the TV.
Dad’s first passion was his God. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a regular in his Pace Makers Sunday School Class and loved nothing more than a lively discussion. That discussion was often carried over to the Sunday dinner table and beyond; there were those times we would look at each other at the dinner table and decide the subject needed to change quickly. He had a strong opinion on Bible interpretation. He had a strong, close relationship with his Lord and Savior. He walked the walk and could talk the talk.
He was a kind man who loved to visit. He loved having lunch at the Nutrition Center which he fondly called the Country Club. He loved the socializing and visiting with the friends at the club. He lunched with his friends for as long as his health permitted.
Dad had a philosophy or an opinion on everything, some of his “Glennisms”: “You have to eat to keep from getting hungry.” “Take a sliver of all the desserts. You might insult the cook if you don’t.” “Clean your plate, there are starving kids in Africa.” “If you can’t get up in time to make it to Sunday School you stayed out too late on Saturday night and we can remedy that next Sunday.” “You gotta be born of the Spirit.”
Glenn was preceded by his parents and his siblings: 6 brothers, Earl, Tommy, Clyde, Carl, Ode, and George and 5 sisters, Cleo Leslie, Mona Cavin and Gahlelah Self, Kelsey and Mildred died in infancy.
He is survived by his three children: Glenn Barry Robbins, Jr., D.O. of Kirksville, MO, Linda Langley and husband Bill of Stilwell, and Rick Robbins, D.O. and wife, Karen of Sallisaw; 7 grandchildren: Danielle Reader and husband Brad of Kimball, NE; Glenn Barry Robbins, III and wife Jennifer of Edmond, OK, Megan Robinson and husband Sean, Broken Arrow, OK; Kerry Harrington and husband Keith, Prosper, TX, Will Langley and wife Amber, Miami, OK, Stephanie Qualls and husband Bobby, Sallisaw, OK and Hal Robbins, D.O. and wife Ashley, Jenks, OK, 17 great grandchildren and a host of nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Barry Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at the Stilwell City Cemetery under the direction of Hart Funeral Home of Stilwell.
